Hey whats up. Just about finishing the turbo build, got the turbo all hooked up, just gotta finish the IC pipes and all. I’ve got an AirResearch 42/48 goin in. I’ve heard some mixed shit about it on an all stock LS (B18A). Some say its too small, others say its too big. Can i get ur opinion on it and some #s before i start the tuning?
That’s the same size turbo I will be using. It spools very fast but the trade off is that it runs out of breath when you get into the upper rpm range. I think a good tuning guidline for a motor that is otherwise stock would be about 10 HP for every psi of boost you run. If you have other mods then you could expect more, but that should give you rough estimate of what to expect with that size turbo.
i ran it for about 8 months and it was a great street turbo, i was shifting at about 6200rpm because there is gobs of tourque around 4k-6k rpm. i liked it and would recommend it to anybody using a stock motor for a turbo build.
thats the size turbo id be using. im just having problems clocking it right now
im running it as well. it does suck up top but i just wanted a turbo and that what i could afford. once it spools it pulls pretty good. im at 7.25 psi
91teggy- im just curious what u are going to be doing about tuning your car. i am going to be going turbo this summer but am still not sure about the tuning part of the project.
I’m using turboedit with a basemap from xenocron right now. I just got a chip burner and some extra chips. Gunna use ECU Control to monitor everything right now and it should be good enough to lay down a decent street tune. But basically u should go the chipped ECU route. Its cheaper than most of everything else, and more reliable.
yea i was thinking of going with chipped ecu and trying to tune myself, but i wasnt 100% sure on what exactly i needed and if anyone in this area would be able to help me. i would not be able to use turboedit since im OBD-1 and was looking at uberdata. are basemaps available on xenocron’s site?

what do you mean by it sucks up top? i have a t3 .42 .48 setup with full race mani and 3"open DP. i havent finished yet though to drive it. i just cant see how if a 14b spools hard on eclipses to 7k redline. how can a bigger t3 not hold to 6800 rpm?
THANK YOU, this has been my point all along, i had no probs with the .42/.48 on my stock LS, and yet everyone else seems to, really makes me want to call bull shit sometimes. and to point out i was running 10lbs of boost too and it NEVER ran out of steam pulled all the way to redline.
thats my theory too. ill chime in more in about a week or two when my car is running. shortly after ill have a track time also!
I want to see dynos of these pulling to the redline.
Anyone who says they “feel” it pulling beyond 6k without dyno sheets is :gay:.
Everyone with a sheet is correct.
Sorry i didnt specify. i have a b16a with a 8300 rpm redline.it runs out of steam at about 7000 for me. so I imagine a b18 would be good based on its redline.
and to point out i was running 10lbs of boost too and it NEVER ran out of steam pulled all the way to redline.
TurboG2teg311- could you give me some more details on your setup? i have a t3 .42/.48 and i will be running close to 10 psi as well. what was your whp, 1/4 times , etc.
thanx
me too^ u should post up the info
I had t3h infamous SSautoshit mani, turbonetics evo w/g, DSM 450’s, s-afc hack, 2.5" downpipe, and a stock B18A, never ran it at the track, but laid out 238whp on a dynojet @10psi, but my motor was pretty beat cant remember the exact comp test #'s but what i do remember was that it wasnt exactly even across the board, but the motor still held up. ran strong, my best kill was a newer trans-am with the WS-6 package on the highway, pulled him about 2-3 car lengths by 110mph.
Dyno sheet? I seriously just want to see one of these turbo’s making good power on a bseries. There is a sohc in a local club here that I rode in last night, same turbo, and it started to peter off in the top end… :bored:
Friends may come, and friends may go.
And friends may peter out, you know.
But we’ll be friends, through thick or thin;
Peter out…or peter in.
