Ack, engine running rough (cams I think)

Ok, I just got done installing some 62403’s w/springs/retainers/valve stem seals and skunk2 cam gears. The engine is running really rough and won’t idle at all, it just dies, and is backfiring (I think backfiring, it’s popping) like crazy under 2000rpm. I think it’s the cam gears being off. How do I go about degreeing them? I have a rough idea of how degreeing works, and I think I have the equipment (just a couple of dial indicators and bases I think is all that’s needed). Anyone know how to do it exactly on LS engines? Like should I run the indicators off the rockers or the cam lobes? I’m guessing the rockers. Or am I just totally wrong on all of this? How else can I set the cam gears to stock settings? I’m going to slap the stock gears on shortly if it stops raining outside (my usual luck  ), and see if that helps the idle. Thanks!

Try loosening your idle adjustment screw on the TB, and I recommend getting an adjustable FPR & gauge to adjust your fuel pressure. My chipped car with 404s ran best at the track at 38psi. I will be getting an AF gauge soon, but I feel its running best at 38psi. The idle gets better the less rich it is. Also if you really want to improve your idle, just reduce the overlap by running -1 +1 or -2 +2 (in/ex) for cam timing.

Thanx for the reply! I switched back to my stock cam gears, and it improved idle significantly, although it’s still a bit lopey. I may have been off a tooth on the exhaust cam when I had the skunk2’s on, I’m not sure. I thought I had them set to stock, but when I pulled it apart again to swap gears back to stock, it looked a bit more off than when I set it initially.

Ok, so running rich will cause a rough idle? My o2 sensor is bad (at least I’m pretty sure it is), and I know for sure I’m running hella rich. I reset my ecu, but that didn’t seem to help the rich condition much if any. I have a fuel pressure gauge on, and stock mine is running at 38psi. I’m probably going for a zdyne in the semi-near future, so I’m not bothering with a fpr yet. I have a new o2 sensor I’ve been meaning to install since I’m almost at the 100k mark, so I’m definitely going to install it tomorrow. I’m going to re-time my ignition as well to see if that helps a bit. Thanks!
