aftermarket steering wheel

my stock steering wheel leaves black peeling leather all over my hands so I was thinking about getting an aftermarket wheel… I understand that I’ll need a hub adaptor to fit an aftermarket wheel on… my question is… is an aftermarket wheel going to sit the same distance from me as stock… or is a hub adaptor gonna make it stick out really far?.. and what’s the difference between $200
wheels and the $25 kits on ebay?.. why would someone actually pay $200 for a steering wheel?

it all depends what wheel yu go with… if yu get a 6 bolt wheel yu will have to get a differnt hub assembly than a 5 bolt… i have a 5 bolt gt Grant Wheel w/ a spacer to mount the wheel… and a Grant Steering Colum Hub (24 dollars) i had to add EXtra spacers to make it so my hands didnt hit the turn and Wiper switches… When i got my parts car with the wheel… the dude used Small 1/4" Sockets to space it out off the Wheel Mount with Long screws… i am using 4 Nuts on the Long screws… But if i tighten the Nuts to much the wheel Squeeks Reallllly high pitch… prolly cause i didnt remove enough of the Stock Assembly. or i didnt really kjnow what i was doing at the time… I Did Not hook up the Horn. Im leaving that for a Later Custom. Follow the Instructions with the Hub yu have to get… if yu get a 5 bolt wheel. yu can get the Grant Hubs from Canadian Tire for the 24 dollars… Make surer yu follow the Directions Regardless ( i did not… now i have a Squeeky wheel if i tighten nuts to much…) im sure the squeeking could be solved if i use Small Sockets like the previous owner did. but Pissh i dont want to loose my sockets.

Here’s my GSR with a Momo Monte Carlo wheel (sorry the cockpit’s a mess).

Check the second photo and compare the gap between the turn-signal stalk and the back of the wheel. I don’t think it is substantially different from that of stock.

Here’s another messy GSR cockpit. I’ve got the NRG short hub and deepdish wheel, and it fits perfectly. If you get a regular flat wheel, make sure you get a longer hub or quick-release, or you’ll have to add spacers like Tokabowla did.

Here’s how the wheel looks. I had to MacGyver a new spring contact inorder for the horn to work.

Notice the how the distance from the steering wheel to the turn signal stalk is very much like stock.

Tokabowla does ur horn work with that wheel?

if you wanna make ANY aftermarket wheel work, & still have the horn, you gotta mod it. Search G2IC for the thread how to hook up horn on aftermarket wheel." I wrote it. It works. I promise. Cruise control can be retained this way too.
Get any wheel you want & follow the directions in my write-up. BEEP BEEP!

The difference in the Ebay & any real quick release or hub is quality. If you care at all about the steering wheel fitting, mounting, or stayin’ on, get a name brand hub! There’s just some things you don’t skimp on. Steering is one of them.

Yes someone would pay $200 on a steering wheel, if you want JDM or genuine leather. You can get a Grant or Pilot wheel for around $80.00 @ autozone or advanced. Just as good. I have had 3 Grants & only changed them for preference. They’ve all held up great, for years at a time in the FLA sun.

The Grant kit comes w/ a spacer set up. you will need the adaptor hub, but it’s only $20.00. If you want a quick release they have one for their wheels too. $140.00 shipped from JC Whitney.
:getsome: :manual:

Oh, & my Grant looks exactly like that Momo.

NRG Short hub with NRG Gen2 Quick Release… This is with a cheap ebay steering wheel.

Now i have the Momo Tuner.

that’s WAY far forward man. Too much for my taste.

momo monte carlo with momo hub. feels just like stock distance

Momo Tuner Steering Wheel w/ Momo Hub(note: I did not have the horn button installed when this photo was taken)

Ermak, you have one of my favorite DA’s. car is clean.

Nice wheels guys, anyone have any Mugen steering wheels or Sparco?

Ermak, you have one of my favorite DA’s. car is clean.

Thanks Alot.

im also looing to get a steering wheel for other reasons, but i don’t know where to start, and what is the difference between nrg 2 and 2.5

I have a hub if you want it. Let me know. It is in my for sale thread. It’s a 5 bolt grant one.

Depending on which hub you get, yes… it will stick out a bit further… (even further if you decide to get a quick release kit)

Cheap steering wheels will melt in the sun… period… They’re usually vinyl, they shrink, the stitching comes apart, and it feels cheap. you get what you pay for.

That may be true Xtreme98, but I’ve had many Grant/Pilot wheels, & all have held up for years. The one I used the longest had 3yrs on it. No probs whatsoever. No fade, drying, cracking, etc. All this in the Florida sun mind you. Did you happen to be near FLA last year? Or a few years back? Pretty hot out there.

Besides, everyone should use a sunshade on the windshield anyway. Keeps prying eyes out too. (if you also have tint.)

so whats a good package to get with a quick release hub?

MOMO Hub, FET Quick release… Wheel of your choice. I personally am fond of nardi :stuck_out_tongue:
