Amp and Sub combo question

Actually you do not even need an amp and sub, I run an Alpine HU and 4 Eclipse 6.5" 2way speakers.

The SQ including bass response is very good, to the point that I have been accused of having a hidden amp and sub.

I spent a lot of time and effort on the speaker install, front speakers are mounted to custom MDF speaker housings, replacing the stock plastic ones and the doors are Dynamated, including replacing stock vapour barrier with a single sheet of Dynamat.
The rear speakers are mounted in custom MDF and fiberglass cabinets, replacing the stock speaker mounting plates, some Dynamating was also done in the rear.

All the wiring is stock except for a 12ga power lead for the HUs constant power and about 12" of 16ga speaker wire in the rear cabinets.

Both sets of speakers are behind the stock grills and the tweeters are disabled on the rear set.

This system was designed and installed for two reasons, first, as a demo for what can be done without amps, [off-board] and subs, second, because I autocross with my car and weight was an issue, and I didn’t want to be pulling a sub box and amp every time I race.

What I recommend is something like the above, use Eclipse SP6500… http://www.eclipse-web.com/point/sp6500.html [it is what I will be replacing my 7yr old 2ways with] remove the tweeters in the rears, find a 4x75W RMS amp, wire the rear speakers in series for an 8 ohm load and bridge the rear channels of the amp into mono.
Time and effort will have to be spent installing the speakers to get the best possible sound from them, the stock speaker mounts just don’t do it.

If after the install you still need more bass, [sub bass] then add a sub, and rewire the rear speakers to the HUs rear outputs and use the amps rear channels to drive a sub.:idea:94

Hey I’m in the process of installing my system but have a speaker ohm question.

I have four 60 watt speakers at 4 ohm each for my front and rears but the amp I have has the specs 75 Watts x 2 into a 4 Ohm load
150 Watts x 2 into a 2 Ohm load

How do I wire up all 4 speakers to work with only a 2 channel amp?
I know I have to wire up 2 speakers together to get a 2 ohm load to use the 150 watts X 2 feature.

So correct me if I’m wrong… I take 2 speakers and hook up negative to negative and positive to positive making it a 2 ohm load then just hook it up to one of the channels? Then do the same for the other 2 speakers? Am I right here?

Oh one more thing… will I damage the 4 ohm speakers if I was to wire them up to get a 2 ohm load? Thanks in advance

no damage. here you go. http://www.crutchfield.com/learningcenter/car/subwoofers_wiring.html?suboptions=2-Channel_4-4ohm-SVC&amptype=2-Channel

Hey thanks for the diagram… exactly what I needed!

Ran into another problem need answering. Help me out shifterkat or fcm.

I have an old Alpine HU with ai-net out and also RCA outs. If I use the ai-net out and hook it up to a processor with ai-net in, so I don’t need to hook up the RCA outs right? What are the advantages/disadvantages from using the ai-net output versus the rca outputs when hooking up alpine units that have ai-net capability? I lost my manual so just making sure before I start working on the HU… thanks in advance guys for helping me out so far…

What is the model number of the Alpine HU?
Ai-Net port allows for connections to Alpine processors and sources, [multi disc changers], unless you have any of the above, there is no use for it, unless you want to turn it into and AUX port.:hmm:94

fcm - my HU is an ol school Alpine CDA 7949 with ai-net. I’ll be hooking that up to an ERA-G320 EQ/processor. I also have an ai-net cd changer. All those are ai-net capable and my question is… what is the advantage of hooking it all ai-net style versus using the rca outputs from the HU and going into the rca inputs of the EQ?

Also… If I was to use the ai-net feature… I don’t need to use the rca’s correct? It’s only one or the other right?

fcm - would you happen to know where I can get the user manual for the HU? I’ve searched everywhere but can’t find it since it’s an old unit.

You can get the manuals from here… http://www.alpine-usa.com/US-en/support/service/service_center.php

This is the operation guide for the ERA-G320… http://vault.alpine-usa.com/products/documents/OM_ERA-G320.PDF :)94

fcm - thanks for the links but no luck in finding the user manual for the cda 7949 cuz it’s an old model… I’ll keep looking.

Anyhow… can you give me some input on my previous post. thank!

You can get any manual from the Alpine parts supplier, it is a printed copy and they will charge you.

Stick with the Ai-Net connections where you can.:sipread: 94

Stick with the Ai-Net connections where you can. 94

So if I use the ai-net connections then I don’t have to use the rca outputs from the HU right?
