Tried to take the instrument panel off to ge to the speedometer cable for lubing. All I got was pissed off, a verrry tight squeeze and no slack at all. It sounds very much like the cable eeeking at 20mph+. Is there an easier way to get to the cable from the engine side?
Yes, you can unplug the speedomotor cable from the engine bay and it’ll give you more slack when removing your instrument cluster. Its located under the distributor sorta. It plugs into the top part of the tranny. Follow a cable that goes from your firewall to the tranny, and that’s it. I can take sum digi cam pix for u guys if i got time tommorow.
OK. Here goes the FIX. EXTREMELY EASY, Do not take the cluster out unless this does not work 1st. Loosen the air intake tube so you can get to the speedometer cable attached to the trans. Pull back the rubber grommet, pull the locking pin off with your fingers. Pull the cable out of the trans, roll the inner cable gently as you pull it out of the sleeve. (comes right out) The cable is wound up wire which may have rust and gunk stuck to it. I used wd40 and a soaked rag to clean the bugger. Figured WD40 would clean and prevent rust opposed to “parts cleaner”, after wiping off excess and the cable was “Sparkling!” rubbed litho bearing grease over the whole thing. Gently inserted it back into the sleeve, to about 3/4 inch from where it naturaly sits, gently twisted it until I felt it engage the speedometer. baada bing! Put the cable back into the trans connected parts, now the sound of silence as I motor about! Took 15 min’s max.
I have the same problem, it’s the speedometer cable need lubricating. I don’t know how to do that so I haven’t been able to do it, yet. I’m just thinking of bringing it to a shop and have them do it, just don’t know how much it’ll cost.
The noise is most noticeable on colder weather…least on hot days. Noise speed is in conjunction with how fast you’re moving.
On highway speeds, you hardly notice it.
