Ok peps
I have a 90 GS with a 5 sped tranny. The motor is knocking. So I was going to rebuid it before I found a real good deal on a B16a2. I got the whole motor, tranny, complete harness, ECU, shift linkage, and the axles for $600. The motor has 20k miles on it. The guy was desprate for cash.
So now here are a few questions. I will have to use my stock ls cable tranny, will this bolt right on the b16a2 block. If it does do I have to buy a new clutch or can I use the one that came with the b16a2 motor (it looks clean and good). Next I will have to use the stock LS harness, so can I use the LS ecu for a while before I can find a obd1 vtec ecu, will the car drive fine with the ls ecu, it does not matter that the vtec doesn’t work for right now.
And will I need anything else.
Has anyone done this swap before? Any advise or do i have to look out for anything?
please help.
Thanks
I would not advise using your LS tranny with the b16 unless you plan on going turbo. You will have to covert your car to odb w/ the b16a2 (90-91 tegs are non odb) If i were you Id sell the engine and make some profit and rebuild your b18 but hey thats just me.
READ THE VTEC SWAP GUIDE!!! Its located in the teg tips section, it will give you all the info you need to answer all the questions you just asked.
but:
-sell the hydro tranny. Buy a vtec cable tranny (either jdm 89-91 b16a tranny (s1/y1/j1), or 92-93 gsr cable tranny (ys1)). make sure you use the right clutch.
-don’t use your stock ecu. buy a non obd pr3 or pw0 ecu.
-sell the distributor. buy a non obd distributor
-sell the injectors. buy a non obd set of injectors (or use your stock b18a ones)
-you will need to run some wires for the vtec solenoid, knock sensor… there are 4 total if i remember correctly.
AGAIN, READ THE SWAP GUIDE!! Everything i just said is in the swap guide, except with more detail. I left it vague purposely because all the detailed info you need is in the swap guide.
Now that i’ve said all of that. I wouldn’t trust the guy who sold you this engine, unless he is family or your best friend. Because I don’t know anyone stupid enough to sell a b16a2 for $600. That engine and tranny with such low mileage is easily worth $2000. You could post it on the partstrader or on ebay and sell it in a matter of days for $1500-$2500. So, i would be weary of the fact that he “needed money” so thats why he sold it for so cheap. Hell, he could have sold the tranny alone for $600!
Well Ihave to get the car running for now so I guess that I will have to use the Ls tranny, But which clutch should I use can I use the one that came attached to the b16a2, or should I use my old LS one?? I read the swap guide and it did not say if I could use the b16a2 clutch.
and also can i use the LS ecu for right now or wil the car won’t start and not drive right??
thanks for the reply guys
You should use your LS clutch - the second gen B16A use a hydraulic clutch whereas your G2 utilizes a cable clutch. Unless you want to spend big bucks converting to hydro . . . .
hybrid nate: the hydro/cable clutch thing has nothing to do with it, instead year is the deciding factor.
your car is a 90, so use your stock ls clutch with your stock ls tranny. the b16a2’s clutch will not work----however if you had a 92-93 integra then it would work in your tranny
ok cool. Thanks guys. Now the only question I have is that can I use the stock LS ecu for now until I have the money to buy a vtec ecu. I know that with the LS ecu the vtec will not work but that’s fine with me because I need the car to drive around in.
Thanks

About the ls ecu
Well about the LS ecu, Im sure you can use it if you are using all the 90 teg electrical, like the distributor, injectors, etc:
I have a 92 ls with b16a2 like yours and Im still using the ls ecu, with all the ls electrical only problem is that its throwing out a check engine light, but its only for temporary.
what did you do with the hydro tranny, if you still have it, sell it on www.thepartstrader.com and buy a s1, or j1 cable tranny that will work with your car.
When I first built my lsvtec, I had the wrong ecu, it was a non-obd ecu, so I used the ls ecu while I broke in the new motor. It didn’t make a difference, it ran normal, no codes; once I got my p30 the engine was already broken in…
