They’re both very similar but which would you guys prefer? I might have the opportunity to get a blown b17 block but I’m not sure if it would be worth it. I could get a complete b16 swap for pretty cheap you know? B16a1 shortblocks are really common right now and only around $150.
If I got the b17 I would most likely balance the crank, get eagle rods and p30 pistons to bump compression to close to 11:1 and possibly get the cylinders honed if they needed it.
I want to be able to rev past 9000 safely (which is why I’m swaying away from an ls/vtec) so I would probably do these things to the b16 block as well. Just seems silly to pay the price for a perfectly fine b16 block if I was going to replace everything in it anyway.
What do you guys think? What’s a good deal for a blown b17 from the oil pan up to the intake manifold? Would it be easier/smarter to just get a b16 swap instead of trying to piece together the engine/tranny/ecu?? TIA.
If the B17 block and crank are in good shape I say go with that. You can get an obd1 ecu already chipped for less than 200.00 at alot of places. If you have trouble finding a tranny you could use your own or see if you could find someone that wanted just a B16 motor and go in with them on buying the whole swap and split it up.
personally i’d go w/ the b17a (in fact i am going w/ a b17a). It seems to me like they have a lot of potential (check out jeff’s (hybridsedan) car. he’s got a b17a sedan w/ i/h/e, and some itr cams and its pretty damn fast.
plus, its more smog legal. of course thats probably not a problem for you, but it is here in cali.
Thanks guys. I’m really curious about what a good deal on this longblock would be. What do you guys think?
well, just to give you something to compare to. Here is what i’m selling:
92 b17a longblock w/ 125k miles, and p61 ecu for $1300 ( i already have a buyer). the ecu alone is worth $250-$400… so, just something to compare to.
So I suppose that’s for a perfectly good b17a longblock and ECU then. Because this one is blown. He said he might go for $200 for just the head whick is still in good shape and that’s about all I would be able to afford right now(i hate being jobless:(). I was hoping he would do $300 shipped for the blown block and head but I think that might be too cheap. That is the reason for my other post. For some reason I’m currently hooked on the b17a. But I need money. Story of my life…
there’s one thing you all have forgotten about…
yes, the b17 crank and rods would do it, but also think about boring the block out a bit… bigger pistons ![]()
sometime down the line for me, i’m planning on getting the b16a swap (everything) and i’m gonna have the block resleeved with GEM sleeves and bored to 87mm … this will give u a motor with the perfect rod/stroke ratio and a displacement of apporx 2 liters
yes this will cost a bit of money… but i think it’ll be worth it in the long run.
edit:
87mm is a bit extreme, only for race applications that you do alot of head removal cuz the head gaskets dont last long…
i’ve read that 86mm is more reliable… but the displacement wont be close to 2 liters. it’ll be close to 1.8 liters… it’ll actually be approx. 1786cc
but still… its a lil smaller than the 3g GSR motor (decent torque) and still have the perfect Rod/Sroke ratio. i’ve also read that the deck hight on the b16a is the same as the b17a, so you could get a b17a crank for your b16a with the 86mm bore and have an even bigger displacement, but with the r/s ratio of the b17a. now u could do this to the b17a as well…
