I know the b20 vs. b16a has been debated over and over, but I was planning on doing a b20 swap till i called up a import shop and they told me that its not worth it for the b20 that the numbers i have seen they have never seen like 140 whp and 135 tq to the wheels with the intake header exhaust. Is this true I would like some people with the swaps to let me know does it pull hard, spin 2nd more from torque, pull on cars u never used, beat a G3 gsr with no problem? And how bad would a b20 beat a b18a when they both had i/h/e. He told me to do a b16a and build it up and ill be with G3 Gsr. So now im asking you guys to let me know, if the b20 really makes these numbers.
i havent gotten on the dyno, and i dont even know if i have the higher compression motor. but what i can tell you is there is a significant amount of torque down low and the torque curve really isnt much of a curve, just continuous torque. theres no problem catching second gear at a little over 3k, and thats only with a “stage 1” exedy organic clutch. all i can say is that im very happy with the motor all around, im curious to see how they handle some 403 or 404 cams. im willing to bet with I/H/E and a VTEC tranny… mid/high 14’s wouldnt be hard to pull off
From my previous b18a, it pulled good for that motor. But since i got this b20, it’s a considerable difference. Chirping 2nd while racing is a sinch. You’re better off leveling the clutch to NOT chirp 2nd, hehe.
Mine is with i/h/e, and a “stage 2” exedy clutch. I don’t have dyno papers yet, but i can assure that shop is really not knowing what they’re talking about. The b16a doesn’t have much torque, it has alot of top end.
Again wat chipper said, with aftermarket camshafts with a higher lift and duration compared to the stock camshafts, you’ll pull 14s easily.
well, my b20 without i/h/e isn’t worth it -yet. I do have a cone filter and a jg tb, tho. There’s definately more low/mid range, but the top end feels no different from my high milage b18a. I think my problem is the sucky b18a intake mani (much smaller ports than the b20 one) and the stock exhaust.
I dont’ know what my cr is but the cylinders are 185+ psi across the board, so the engine is good. It must be entirely the need for BREATHING, what’s the point of upping the displacement if you don’t add more air (and let more out) - as far as top end goes, anyway.
Some one also said that the auto jdm b’s have weaker cams too, i dunno, but mine was an auto.
next year i’ll pop on h/e and the b20 intake mani, i think i can rig the vacuum hoses. Then we’ll see…
there’s also a chance that my brakes are dragging a little, so that wouldn’t help, plus my clutch is the stock original, but it seems to grab well, i spun the first three gears at the track on my first launch attempt, but clutches are weird.
