Bad Valve seals= HP loss?

My valve seals have been leaking for awhile now and my car is feeling pretty sluggish am I loosing power because of this?

possibly since you’re burning motor oil.

I’ve been making sure to keep it filled so I don’t think that’s why.

What Elmer was saying is that when motor oil is dropping into your combustion chamber it is degrading your octance level and causing an incomplete fuel burn and poor combustion. That can be a power robber. Hope this helps.

That makes sense thank you.

and the oil will cake on the top of your valves and impede airflow

Would you guys pay a couple hundred dollars to get this fixed or buy a whole new head??

weigh you’re milage vs. the cost of getting a b20 head or somthing.

Why would I want to put a B20 non-vtec head on a B16? Am I missing something?

it shouldnt cost THAT much to do should it? im sure the seals are <30$ (i got a whole head gasket kit for 120) and all you need to do the job is the valve seal remover and installer tool (40-50each), and a compressor w/attachment to hold the valves up so you dont have to take the head off. it can be done w/o the tools, but it is a major PITA.

Yeah but you can get a whole B16 for $450 on hondamotorsonline so I’d get a block with it for maybe 300 more after shipping. Or I was thinking of doing like a gude or JG package if the package includes new valve guides and seals.

maybe you can find a shop or a friend of a friend thatll let you borrow the tools?

yikes, i guess that means you don’t have an old high milage ls engine in there…

i didn’t know they made a valve seal remover/installer
40-50 bucks sounds kinda steep
i just clamped the seals with needle nose vise grips and pulled them out
the new ones just snap into place and can be done by hand
does the tool remove the seals without damaging them?
the reason i ask is because one time i put the seals on before i put the retainer in place
and well you know what happens

ya those are for the honda/snapon tools. when i removed mine, i just tore the crap out of them with pliers. no problem. the tool for that just looks like long pliers with two clips on the end to slide under the seal.
when putting them on, i just used the right sized socket and pounded them in, but noticed they left a slight indentation in the rubber ring. no problems now, but i would rather them go in perfectly.
sorry, what i meant to say was more critical was the valve keeper installer. those are easy to remove with a mallot, but installing them is a nightmare for a newbie

mallot? ouch sounds rough
but i know what u mean when working with the keepers thosse things are easy to lose
i even found one on my drivers side floor mat the other day

I noticed that there was a lot of oil/sludge coming out of the breather tube that goes into my air intake I guess from so much cylinder head pressure. I unhooked it and let it drain to the floor of my engine. I found a JG head package for my car for $750 that would replace the seals and give me a P and P and a couple other things. So if the cost to fix the seals is over $400 I’m just gonna send it to JG… There goes my turbo fund.

dont give up. im sure theres someone who will do it for you for 100 or so. **** for 400, id rather buy the valve keeper installer (50), valve seal installer (50?), compressor attachment (15?), seals (30?) and do it myself in maybe one or two hours. cost=150 or less.
you dont need tools to remove the valve keepers or seals, they can pop off and twist off.

The problem is that it’s a JDM motorswap and when I take it into shops they’re like WTF? I’ve called three shops and they can’t even figure out what parts I’ll need from talking to the Honda dealership. I’ve never done anything that serious to my car so I’m kinda worried about screwing it up if I do it myself.

theyre retarded. its just a bseries motor. i think the tool is universal for honda if not most imports. if you cant find it locally, try shopping.yahoo.com
