Battery Relocation Complete

I am sorry if I sound dumb  [/B]

I think most people do it for weight balance. Others do it for weight balance and room for turbo parts. Then there’s the ‘clean engine bay’ look that is popular these days. All kinds of reasons really.

I’m not so sure about the smell or wether or not the fumes are harmful. Just to be on the safe side I’m going to get one of those boxes. I figure there must be a reason why they make em!

It is my understanding that closed gel-celled batteries need no ventilation. If you are using a standard battery you must ventilate!

that’;s true, and you can also mount optima gel cell’s on their side- a way to get it lower maybe?!?! anyways- i’ve seen the relocation boxes sold by summit and was wondering if they sell the box w/o all the mounting hardware and wire. all the catalogs i’ve seen show it sold only with a kit. thanks guys.
and the reason i’m going for the rear battery is b/c i wanna strait 3" pipe for my intake instead of that curve you have to make like the aem cai setups they sell. my suspicion tells me a strait pipe will produce better results than a curved pipe in terms of cold air intake setups.

I will sell you my red Summit box…brand new, make offer.

One reason why I refuse to relocate my battery to the hatch. I drive my car everyday and I would hate to have a battery start venting on me if it shorts out. Hydrogen is very hazardous and smells like crap! I don’t do enough “spirited” driving now these days to merrit this modification. It is cool though when you pop the hood of a car and the battery is “missing” :ok:

Sealed, gel cell, or both types of batteries still vent hydrogen like any other automotive battery if it’s shorted out or if your charging system is charging at more than 14.8 Volts for an extended period of time. “Sealed” batteries just means that you don’t have direct access to the cells, but vents do still exist. On Optimas the little felt dealies near the terminals are the vents.

Thanks Elmer, I was looking at those thingies and wondering if that’s what those were. So venting even an Optima would be a wise idea, eh?

I’ve had an Optima short out on me before. The battery was sizzling and smelled like rotten eggs. If I relocated a battery to the back I’d have it in an isolated container venting only to the outside of the car Optima or not.

I got a batterybox from walmart $7, I bought a Truck kit and the batt. box was enormous. I just need to screw it down to my trunk. Suppose I better fix my antenae before I do anything like that though.

you got a red one? I ended up with a black one… but as for venting the battery… cutting through the floor and fabricating something is sounding like the way to go now… I just need to borrow our mig welder from work now… hehe…

what about the vents on the sides of the trunk?

Good thread u got going here, Steve… archivethis
