Hey. When my car is fully warmed up and at idle, it bounces up and down from 1000 to 1500 rpm sorta quickly. It doesnt stop. It doesnt feel or sound like its gonna die. I replaced my O2 sensor today and reset the ECU but the problem is still there… What else should I be lookin at?
check your coolant level. I know, it sounds silly. But it just might be your problem.
it could also be your TPS, but if that was bad your ecu would be throwing a code.
oh, and are you sure you reset the ecu correctly?
Coolant level is good.
I reset the ECU properly.
Check engine light does not come on. Ill check the ECU LED in a lil while…
It’s should be your TPS. When my TPS was messed up my idle jumped up and down just like you’re said.
Well good luck.

Yeah that was my 2nd guess. Any way to make 100% sure thats my problem? How much $ that gonna set me back?
if your ecu isn’t throwing the TPS code then i’d hold off on replacing it just yet. I had to have mine replaced and the shop made me replace the whole TB (this was back when i didn’t have g2ic, and didn’t really know how to work on my car). I think it cost me about $240 for labor and the TB.
you can remove the TPS and replace it w/ a new one, but its not easy. Its riveted on, and not meant to be removed. So, getting yours off, finding just a TPS, and then putting it back on isn’t the easiest job.
If i remember correctly there is one other thing that can cause the bouncy idle. I haven’t had experience w/ it so i don’t know much about it. I believe its called the IACV, i’m not sure if i put those letters in order or not. But i believe its a vavle that somehow dictates idle speed. You’ll have to ask around for info on it. I’d make sure its not your IACV before pursuing the TPS, because i’m pretty sure that replacing the IACV will be easier/cheaper than the TPS.
I had the same problem, but it was after i had about $2500 worth of engine work to it. It is related to the EACV, Electronic Air Control Valve, i believe is what it stands for. its between the engine and firewall, almost center. Look into that. I never got mine fixed, because it was more involved that just replacing it. Good Luck
I started having this problem after I did my b16 swap. The mechanic who finished the work for me said it might be the IACV and that I should try to find a new one. I should have the new one installed in a few days. I’ll post and let you know if it works.
Thanks for the replies guys. Let me know how the new IACV works out and how much it cost you.
An update: After resetting my ECU again, My car does its thing at idle a bunch, then stops and idles at like 1200rpm, then after about a minute, drops down to a perfect idle at 750.
maybe it just take a long time for your car to warm up. cuz it sounds like just doing what it does to warm up. okay prolly not but maybe
Nah man. I let my car warm up completely before it moves from wherever it was sitting, then even after a whole bunch of driving, it still does it. Every redlight, stopsign, crosswalk. Ill figure it out when the spring tune up rolls around next month. But thanks anyways ![]()
what’s your AIM sn or Email ad?
I had the same problem… I know the fix

Thanks man! ![]()
Its fixed and I didnt have to spend a penny.
Other than the $35 for a new O2 sensor when I thought that was wrong. ![]()

What I did was turn the (I think) idle adjuster screw, the little screw right above where the intake pipe connects with the throttle body, all the way in, then backed it out 2 turns. My car idles perfect now. It hasnt bounced once since I did it yesturday morning. idle has been perfect every time.
If it isnt already, this should be archived or whatever cuz its a prety common problem. Saves people money too.
unfortunately that isn’t a universal fix. a honda tech adjusted my idle screw for me, and it worked at first, but only for when my engine is warm. when I start it, now it revs upto 3k, slowly drops to about 2.5k and then bounces until it is warm and then it runs fine. my new manifold will be installed tomorrow with a new IACV. I’ll post to let you all know if it works.
I had to deal with that damn idle problem for months and lemme tell u its a pain in the ass. after taking my engine apart and staying up till 4 am in my garage driving myself crazy about 100 times i have fixed the problem. the three common things that cause it are the-
Idle air control (or electronic air control)-bolted to the back of the intak manifold by 2 12 mm bolts 2 coolant lines and 1 elctrical connection.
fast idle valve - bolted under the throttle body , 2 coolant lines 3 bolts…
vac leaks can do it and the TPS could also be the problem
i found the best way to check is to take off the intake, there are 2 holes in the throttle body. the top supplys air to the IAC the bottom to the fast idlevalve .plug the hole up with your finger and you idle shoul stop bouncing once u plug off the problem. i know its a pain so if u need help email me at deeznutz373@aol.com
The new IACV did work to fix my bouncing idle. So for those of you who have messed with your screws and filled your coolants and still have the bouncing idle problem; consider replacing your IACV.
What did you pay for your iacv Nab16teg?
I also have this same problem with my teg…I just did a coolant flush and it didnt solve it…My idle bounces between 1000 and 1500 and if i let it idle for a while it eventualy (most of the time) goes back to normal… I havent played with my idle skrew…and am not sure if i should…i dont know anyhting about it but you say skrew it all the way in then back it out 2 full turns??? Does that sound right?? Im not to sure… lemme know
thanx for the help!
G2integration: My car does the exact same thing as yours…it bounces from around 1000-1500 for a bit then stops at around 1200ish, then after a while drops to a perfect idle…
If you fixed your lemme know because it sounds like we have the SAME problem…
Thanx
