Under certain conditions, such as when it is very hot or in the middle of summer, or when I have repeatedly braked during stop-and-go traffic, my brake pedal feels like it fades out and goes right to the floor, and I have to pump it once or twice to get good braking effect. In the cold weather like it is right now in Michigan, the problem completely goes away. I am thinking that my master brake cylinder is dying, but I really dont’ know for sure what the problem is. Any ideas, and how much it will cost to fix?
My teg did that a while ago… but it didn’t depend on the weather. Turns out my brake booster was worn out. When you press the brake with the engine off, do you hear any liquid gushing noise coming from the brake area? That’s a sure sign it’s the brake booster.
mine did that, time for a new master cylinder, it cost me alot
Braking trouble
Hi guys
mine does exactly the same thing. When it’s cold, no problem. But during the summer it was a real hassle. It has all the signs of a master cylinder, but I have put 3 used ones in and none seem to improve the situation. I took them out of the cars myself so I had assumed that they were not bad. One was even a new replacement. Maybe it is the brake booster? I can’t imagine you loosing pedal pressure from the booster though.
I still have this problem and would love it if someone else knows for sure what the issue is.
N FUL FX: No, I don’t feel anything unusual when pushing on the brake petal with the engine off.
Tenzoteg92 : How much did it cost you to replace the master cylinder?
Any idea why this would be temperature-dependant?
I had that same prob. I changed my master cylinder (like 100 bux, give or take a few, or so installed) and they work great now… oh ya… plus new rotors and pads… but that didn’t help the prob…
had the same problem. a NEW master cylinder fixed me right up.
same problem
I’ve got the same problem. Usually when it’s cold, I can manage it. I find that when I’m on hills and in traffic, I’m using the parking brake a lot to keep safe. At meineke, they said they would fix it for like $400 so I said no. Is that just a bad price or is that what it costs? Also, is it worth it to try to replace it myself or pay for labor?
have u guys checked for leaky brake lines or air in the system? it could be as simple as the lid on the master cylinder isn’t sealed properly.
so do we think this is caused by master cylinder or brake booster? and how much to have each of these replaced, including labor and parts? i’ve been having the same problem and kept forgetting to post about it.
Mine did that a couple times this summer when it was pretty hot. I figure it’s the master cyl. but since the weather has cooled down quite a bit I’m not gonna worry about it until Spring time.
That’s exactly what mine does-- it happens only when it is hot and I am in stop-go traffic. In the winter it doesn’t happen.
I had the same problem. The brake pedal just went straight down to the floor. It’s the master cylinder. Change it.
I had the same problem but instead of changing the whole master cylinder the dealer here changed the primary and secondary pistons, obviously it costs much cheper and the problem is fixed now. the only time U need to ghange the master cylinder is when you have pitting corrosion on the inner walls of the cylinder, I mean where the primary and seconday pistons move. just take the master cylinder out and chcek for the inner walls, and if there is no corrosion on the walls you can go for the pistons only.

How much did it cost you to just change out the pistons?
I don’t know the current price also I had it in my local currency, but this week I will be going for the dealer and for sure will get the price and convert that into dollars and post it, furthermore I will be getting the part number. Believe me this works if inner walls of the master cylinders has not corroded. mine had exactly the same symptoms, it used to fade under very hot conditions, and especially when my A/C was on. the mechanic showed me the condition of the pistons when he took them out the seal like rubber parts on the pistons were distorted.
Today I got to my Honda dealer and finally got the prt numbers. there are 3 parts to be replaced if you are sure that inner walls of your cylinder are ok. The people there told me that most of the time it is only these parts that need to replaced not the master cylinder itself. I checked the parts catalog myself and this is how they are named with the respective parts numbers.
piston Assy, primary 46120-SE1-003
pistonAssy, secondary 46122-SE1-003
Guide Assy, piston 46135-SE3-013
I hope this helps
