can i swap in a a b18c1 in my 1992 teg

always wondered if this is possible considering i have a ys1 tranny and that has a y80 tranny… cable vs. hydraulic, can it be done, anyone ever done it.

Yes, it can be done, has been done, and will be done by myself within the next 2 weeks. I guess you know the engine bolts right in. Any ‘B’ series trans. will bolt up to any ‘B’ series engine. Your best bet is to find a GSR YS1 or a JDM S1 which are both VTEC transmissions. You can use your LS YS1 but the gearing is not suitable for the VTEC engine.

why is the gearing not suitable?

The shorter gears are more ideal.

From experience, I would still prefer
a b16 or b18c even with an LS gearbox
over a b18 non v. setup.

People are so quick to say “Dont
even run an Ls tranny with a b16, youll
be sorry!”, but its funny cause with an
upped x-over you can still pass right by
them. Sure the diff is like night and day
between the two, but a b16with the tall
gears may not be fast in the neigborhood,
but you can punk people on the fwy.

It seems no one ever shares that side of it.

i’m running an LS tranny in my 91 with a b18c1 motor in it. long-a$$ gears, but the sound of Vtec in 3rd@5500 all the way up to 7500-8 with skunk2 IM sounds friggin sweet! hahahahhaha!

I got the B18C1, with a b16 ys1 tranny and one of my most favourite things in the world is taking off at lights- not necessarily fast, and swapping cogs quickly. it rises to 3500 so rapidly, you may not like gear changes though…?

the only thing i miss my ls tranny is that i cant do 145 mph ,now i can only do 130 with b16 tranny with my b18c

What about the JDM Y1 tranny which comes out of the B16 in Japan i believe it’s found in the XS-i which i think is there version of our GS-R.

Im looking into getting that exact tranny in my teg…im running an ls/vtec swap and need a shorter gearing tranny what do you think about that tranny is it worth it?

It is definitly worth it, the shorter gears are just so much fun, and make your car faster too! i think it would take quite a while to hit 8000rpm with a longer geared trans. you gotta like revs though cos on the freeway at 100kmh she’s revving at about 3750 i think, which is pretty high and bad for fuel economy! oh well.

i don’t see how a ls/vtec powered teg w/ a ls tranny will be that much slower than the same one w/ a gsr tranny(shorter gear). When you shift at say 8k in 1st into 2nd -you won’t be out the powerband because of the ls crank-true? you would get more traction lost w/ shorter gears- and you’re restricted to 130mph at most. Does anyone have any experiences between the two-performance wise?!?!

Basicly I think its the fact that when you hit your shift
at the top of redline with the taller gears, it doesnt keep
in vtec. It doesnt drop too low, just low enough that your
out of your ‘fun spot’.

You can tell the difference with the other trannys. They stay
wound up as opposed to feeling like your starting over after
each shift.

Hope this makes some sense.

i don’t think that’s going to be a big deal-i’m used to an ls tranny w/ a ls engine.

I’m running a B16A1 JDM head on top of a B18C1 ('96 USDM)bottom end and the JDM Y1 cable tranny in my '93 LS. Close gearing and lots of fun. 5th gear is a little busy on the hwy, turning 4k @ 72 MPH, but the mileage is still pretty good. I never seem to fall below 30 mpg even when spending quite a bit of time in Vtec, and on a 1500 mi. trip from Florida to Wisconsin I recently got 32-33 mpg by firing up the cruise control and tying my right leg behind my back!

The Y1 actually came from the 88-91 JDM Civic/CRX Si-R. The gearing is just slightly longer than those of the VTEC YS1/S1 but would hardly be noticeable if you compared them on similar setups. They also had an optional LSD in them, so you could get lucky!

I plan on doing the swap also. What kind of concerns are there with this swap? Wiring issues? What is needed to complete this swap?

depends if your car is 90-91 non obd or 92-93 obd1 , but your screen name im guessing you have a 92-93 ,if you already have vtec b17 a b18c swap would be very easy using your old gsr tranny with the b18c block no other mods needed , if you have a ls like me , i picked up a b18c gsr longblock for around 1400 and a b16 a cable transmission for about 300i bought a new act clutch (i reccommend changing the clutch when you have the motor pulled)also i bought a gsr p72 ecu all else you need to do is run 4 wires to run vtec not that hard of a swap ,if you need more info ask dan g2 guru or look at his swap guide very useful , good luck
