Trying to change pads and rotors today…got the caliper off…and the caliper mounting bracket off…but the 2 phillips head screws that hold the rotor in place WILL NOT come off…teg tips says to use an impact gun…my cousin has a black and decker drill which we tried…but it wont come off…its kinda stripping the + on the screw…I DUNNO WHAT TO DO!..SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!
In my Acura service manual, it says that if the screws are difficult to remove, that you should thread some 8mm bolts into the other holes, it is supposed to work! Also, make sure not to strip those screws … I almost did that to one of mine … gotta have a lot of pressure on the screw, and twist slow. I found with the one that was about to strip, that moving to a larger Phillips head made it easier. HTH
Haha, use an impact gun… Its impossible without it.
Now that you have striped them use that B&D with a drill bit!
dan and i changed my brakes 2 weeks ago. there is a special tool you can get at an auto parts store that you can hammer, which has bits. the force from your hammer will turrn the bit (phillips bit in our case) the same amount of force.
make sure that you lube it well too. DO NOT STRIP the screw, you will regret it.
good luck.
jeff
wouldn’t you post this in integra help?
well anyways, yes, you can get a impact hammer from the auto parts store and that should work, if it does strip out, use something called a reverse drill bit. The bit drills in the reverse direction and pulls out striped screws when it hits the hard peice of metal. works everytime. sad part is the bits cost about 50 bucks from snap on.
speaking of brakes…i changed my rotors ( powerslots ) a while ago w/ oem pads. Meanwhile, a friend of mine had all his brakes redone ( new rotors, (not performance) and pads). his pedal pressure is MUCH higher than mine and feels like his brakes are better. Mine has a mushy feel to it…but i have bled my brakes plenty of times. anyone have any suggestions?
this really sucks, i know i should of gotten hawk HPS’s…but no i had to get them that day, and go w/ oem…sheesh…anyhelp would be nice.
ps every now and then im getting a rubbing / gridinign sound coming out of my left front ‘area’. this happened before and i tightened the moutning nuts ( they got loose ) and it fixed it for a while. not a similiar noise has re-appeared and doesn’t sound healthy. but all the bolts are tight. Can the actual pad slip out of the caliper and kinda rub against the middle part of the rotor? could this be linked to the fact that my brakes feel kinda mush mush? thanks for your help…later
Another quick thing to remember when trying to take those screws out, make sure you use the right bit!! I’ve seen many people try and use a Reed and Prince bit on a Philips head
screw… they just mangle the thing.
I think we’re all smarter than that though…![]()
hi guy acura tech here from dealership in montreal canada easy way to remove hold down screws in driveway is with a center punch here’s how: near edge of screw head make dimple with punch then use punch to turn screw head buy hitting punch counter clock wise on about 45 degree angle to hub mounting surface! (it’s better to make 2 dimples in screw head one each side of head) to free up screw first hit head squarely with large round punch or use a large nail make shure head is same size as hold down screw’s dont be shy give a good whack you will distroy screw heads but will be able to remove them :ps screws just to keep us techs in a job hard to remove for you do it your selfers also if you want screws are cheap about a buck a piece at dealer when re installing use a little anti seize ?(copperslip by whurth or molycote from autoshop store)![]()
I got my impact wrench(gun) at sears for like 12 bucks. Its a great tool to have for numerous occasions. Makes those little suckers a breeze to take off.

no it’s not, just get one of those screwdrivers that you hit with a hammer and it will break it loose.
wow…quite a few responses…been a long time since i checked it…
i actually ended up taking it to firestone…they loosened the screws for me…put them back on handtight so i could get them off…ended up costing me $15 for that…no biggie
but i ran into another slight problem along the way…on the last wheel…gonna have to make another post about this one…
dude, for $15 you could have bought a impact screwdriver and taken it out every single time you wanted to.
