hey andee moving to west covina? my city hehe, its nice around here, plus we got a couple g2icers in our city…
When I cleaned all my parts this is what I did:
I used the aircraft paint stripper to get off any crap that might be on there. Then I used a degreaser and sprayed that on. Went to a car wash place and pressure washed it all off. Then took it back home and used a wire brush to make the surfaces smooth and debris free. Used some more degreaser and did the same with the garden hose. Then after I got soap and water to get my finger prints off and spray painted the parts with high temp engine paint from Kragen or Autozone. Now I can eat off of it and not get some freak disease! Looks sooo friggin nice too
You will want to tape up any holes where you don’t want the paint to go in for obvious reasons and less work afterwards. I put about 5-8 coats of paint (5 cans worth) on the block and head so I don’t have to worry about it chipping off r anything.
If you don’t want to paint with a color, you can also just use the high temp clear coat paint.

any pics of your work? is the grime on the rest of the head and block really that hard to get off? as far as the valve cover, i heard that the aircraft stripper just melts it away w/o effort.
yeah im itrested in seeing some pics on how it came out to
Here is one pic of the block…Its not that clear…I’ll try to get some more pics up that I have (just not uploaded onto a server).

I did all that just cuz I’m pretty anal about painting stuff and doing something right the first time so I don’t have to do it again later…I probably did a little overkill with it, but who cares right, better to do it while its out of the car instead of in the car.
Email me for more pics and to just remind me to upload them....rcnacura@aol.com
does painting resist grime collection?
rcnacura: that looks realy good. did you use dupli 1200 degri aluminum(silver) paint. that is what i have and will be using on my head.

here are some more pics and the paint that I used…

rcnacura: hey whats up. whats is the difference between high heat paint and engine enamel. how hot would a head get?
thanks

Its ability to stick to hot surfaces…I used the 500 degree one when I should of used the 1500 degree. But if it comes off, it comes off, but I doubt it will since I put more on…
I would also think enamle is a little better because it reminds me of like the enamel on your teeth…which stick really good??
rcnacura: did you use the 500 degri engine primer with the enamle,or did you jsut spray the enamle straight on the engine? i think im gona go with the enamle to paint my head.
thanks

didn’t use any primer at all. Just painted the block and head as is after my obsessive compulsive cleaning of the pieces.
Sorry about reviving such an old thread, but I did a search and this was as close as I could get to an answer.
I’m wondering if it’s okay to clean the inside of my valve cover with soap and hot water, because there’s a panel attached to the underside that looks like it might be made of steel, but I am not sure and I don’t want it to rust if it is.
I’m asking because I don’t really have alot of alternative cleaners lying around and I’m sorta kinda a bit poor at the moment.
(is it okay that I revived an old thread? This is my first post :uhoh: )
Thats perfectly fine. Just make sure to wash off all the soap, and make sure it dries before you re-install it. Compressed air and a sunny afternoon will make that pretty easy.
