thanks to the rain, my auto to manual tranny swap is delayed.
my question is: should I buy an aftermarket clutch or stay with the stock one and save the money??? I never really payed any attention to clutches, but now that i’m putting in a 5-speed and was told that it’d be a good idea to replace the clutch, I don’t know what to do. Are aftermarket clutches really all that better than stock. I know that they are stronger and grab harder, but will that make a big difference?? Would having an aftermarket clutch give me the advantage over a car that has i/h/e and i only have exhaust???
Also, are stage 0 clutches better than stock clutches or are they the same???
I have an ACT Stage 1 with my GS-R YS1. It feels like stock but you can tell there is no more slipping at all.
Total cost for parts was $320 for Clutch, Pressure Plate, Throw out bearing and Pilot bearing. $40 to resurface my flywheel.
I’m very happy with it. I can drop the clutch at 3,000 rpms and it spins the tires all the way up to red line, then chirps 2nd and 3rd gear. If your stock clutch has even a little slippage, an aftermarket one that doesn’t slip at all will give you better performance. Even when my stock clutch was in good shape, a red line shift would have the revs drop down as the flywheel and clutch matched speeds. With my ACT, the car lurches forward as the clutch just grabs the flywheel with no slippage at all. Not too good for my motor mounts but its fun as hell.
did a search but couldnt find it…anyone know how much a stock clutch costs from the dealer or from ahmotor.com? And does anyone know what all it comes with? Thanks.
I definitely agree with InstantRamen that you can’t beat OEM clutch longevity. Being a once in a while racer (on the bottle), I wanted something with greater holding power and the longevity of an OEM. That is why I went with Exedy, formerly Daikin Manufacturing Company, is the largest independent OEM clutch supplier to the Japanese automotive market. I got the Clutch, Pressure Plate, Throw out bearing and Pilot bearing for $255 shipped from clutchcityonline.com
