cracking and wrinkling paint in one spot

OK, before I bought my car someone put these mouldings around the outside of all the wheel wells…it’s not the stock moulding that goes around the inside of the wheel well, but custom moulding that goes around the outside of the wheel well. It was glued on and I could tell they were put on after the last owner had the paint job done because after I cleaned everything off everything was smooth and clean except for one place. On the back passenger side there was a line of dirt outlining where the moulding used to be. The paint or whatever this stuff is on this side is cracking off and looks kind of wrinkly. With my nails I cracked off a little tiny bit just to see what was there. The paint underneath this wrinkly and crackly build up looks fine. So what I’m wondering is if this is some sort of build up, or paint, or clearcoat of some sort. But mainly what I want to know is how to get rid of it. What can I do to restore the smooth finish to just this one area?

will an abrasive cleaner or some sort of wax do the trick? I have yet to ever wax my car and I went through some of my dad’s stuff and found a two step Meguir’s thing and I used both on these spots but nothing really happened. Some of the black dirt that was gathering there went away with that treatment, but there is still crackling and wrinkling there. There must be something to smooth over the finish and clean it up well.

just try it, it can’t hurt.

try what though? any good brands out there? I don’t want to go out and spend 10 or 15 bucks on something that won’t work.

for the cracking use the gs-27 crayons. then use the gs-27 paste over it. that should do the trick, the kit runs for $10-15 at your local autobody shop.

what is that? do i just go ask for that stuff at a body shop? and what exactly is that stuff…never heard of it…thanks for the help so far

oops i didn’t mean to say autobody shop. i meant autoparts store, kragen, pep boys. I think wal-mart and like stores should have them too.

hey I checked my local shops here in Canada and they don’t have any of that gs-27 stuff. What kind of thing is that? Maybe I could find a product similar to that here. IS there any other suggestions…i’ve tried wax, cleaner, rubbing alcohol, and other stuff and nothing really works.
