Hey guys/gals! I have a question and i need the BEST answer…
With the JDM B16a that come with LSD tranny’s, what kind of LSD comes with? I’ve been told that it’s a Kaaz clutch type LSD and NOT the Helical LSD like the type R has? Please only answer if you are absolutely certain of your answer. Thanks!
i dont know why honda would put a clutch type LSD in their cars since they are all but useless in a FWD configuration.
but no, I do not know for sure. Also have you purchased one already and are curious or just wondering for shits and giggles?
The b16a I purchased had imported had an aftermarket JDM LSD in it- if it has a cast casing it is OEM(usually) and if it is billit it is aftermarket btw.
Okay, so would you guys say it’s safe to say that NO Honda LSD from the factory would be a “Clutch” type? My good friend just did a B16 swap into his CRX and was having problems with the LSD making wierd noises and clunking when turning while on the gas…he called the place he ordered the engine from and was told that his tranny has a clutch LSD installed. (My friend never took off the tranny to inspect it before installation, and he is NOT very mechanically inclined enough to drop the tranny by himself) So, he is in a wierd position. His tranny makes wierd noises and clunks hard enough when turning to move the steering wheel and the guy he bought it from said that he needs to put Kaaz LSD oil in the trans to stop this. Where do you think we should go from here?? Also, the guy that did the installation (shop here in Vegas) added Honda MTF to the tranny, would the Kaaz fluid work better??
See, that’s the thing, we don’t know if it is a Kaaz or not…the guy that imported the engine just said it’s an OEM Honda LSD (clutch type)…and without opening up the tranny to see, it’s impossible to guess.

I was told as well that my Y1 tranny was equipped with an optional OEM LSD, which is why I paid $200 extra. When it came in, we inspected the tranny and LSD and the housing for the LSD was billet. There are no OEM LSD housings that are billet, they are all cast. The LSD I received was of the same variety as a Quaife- just a JDM version.
Before attempting to fix this, find out exactly what you are fixing and remove the tranny and inspect the LSD. Guessing on this will do you no good, its just something you need to do.

u didn’y happen to take a pic of it did u? the ys1 OEM LSD is a machined peice… granted not billet, but def. not cast. huge too… i need to take a pic of it.

i had the same exact problem. i still dont know what LSD i have. LOL. but the honda MTF made my tranny very very clunky. the kaaz fluid on the otherhand did the trick.
If he can’t drop his own tranny how did he dream up that it’s his LSD?
Sounds like axles clear as crystal to me… Especially considering it’s the wrong engine in the wrong car.
I did an LS/VTEC swap and put a CM stage 3 clutch in… Did a bunch of bottom-end work too but u know… went through 3 passenger-side axles in less than 2 months. 3rd time was the charm tho.
I didn’t “dream” this up…this is my friend’s engine/trans…he ordered it with the LSD and when the engine was out of the car (obviously before install), he checked and could see through the diff, therefore indicating it was a LSD. Now, he did NOT disassemble the tranny to check what kind of LSD he had, and he doesn’t have the ability to drop the tranny on his car (I won’t do it, don’t like working on other’s cars in case shit happens) so he’s in a bind, he doesn’t want to waste $$ paying someone to drop the tranny and find out what kind of LSD he has, although this may be his only option.
To all others, thanks for your opinions, and does anyone have any pictures of the various LSD’s that came from Honda for reference?
Well… My intentions weren’t to piss ya off man it just seems funny claiming your LSD is making noises because I mean honestly… How do u come to that conclusion?
Anyhow, like I said, the noise when turning and on the gas sounds like axles to me, but I could be wrong. I’m just doubting it’s the differential considering they’re much less likely to be making funny noises while turning than the axles…
In all honesty, best wishes in getting the Honda working properly… Once again, sorry if I pissed ya off.
btw guys…harry knows his poop. and i agree completely…i’d check axles before blaming the LSD. OEM LSD’s are pretty beefy units, and even if it’s not an OE honda LSD, most aftermarket units are pretty friggin beefy as well.
Harry, i’m not pissed at you…i really appreciate your input…we’ve double checked the axles and made sure they weren’t binding…it’s only making noise when cornering under acceleration…so if it was the axles, it’d be making noise whenever turning, regardless if it was accelerating or braking in the turn…this car makes noise only when accelerating. That’s why we think it’s the LSD. So, again, i’m not pissed, and I appreciate any input from everyone! I’ve very thankful for everyone on this board, you’ve all helped me whenever i’ve been stuck and needed help!
I don’t think my axles made noise while not accelerating, just turning either… It’s been sooo long since I got to drive the teg. damn paintjob is almost at the 6 month mark.
Besides, what would a turn matter to the differential? The tranny never moves side-to-side… just spins. There of course, is more stress on the axles when turning, but I’m still sayin it’s not the LSD. What would cause it to go out anyways? How do LSDs fail?
did your friend change the tranny oil yet? if money is an issue, they sell the cheapo gl-5 gear oil at autozone. you mix that in with regular transmission oil. this is much cheaper than going out and getting the kaaz oil. it sounds like youre using the wrong oil, well thats what happened in my situation.
hth!
