OK, I’ll save you the time and money. This has been done before, hollowed out cat made more power that a CLOGED stock cat, less power than a good stock cat, less than a test pipe and less than a Carsound cat.

Ben
ok that is completly understandable all i wanted to do was make a point on most of our cars the cats have lots of miles on them. Can you tell me what made the most power out of all of those
I’m not 100% sure since I read the article quite a while ago, but I think it was:
#1 Test Pipe
#2 Carsound Cat
#3 Good Stock Cat
#4 Hollowed out stock cat
#5 plugged up stock cat
I got numbers
If I could find somebody with a scaner I would have shown you all…
I have a 92’ RS, stock EVERYTHING except a cold air intake and a hollowed out cat,… stock exhaust manifold and stock muffler.
I have been racing my Teg with just the cold air intake and the lowest I could go was 16.6 in the 1/4 mile with a very bad clutch and a very bad motor mount… OK, I wanted to go lower, and me having no money, the cheapest thing I could do was hollow out the cat,… so I did.
I noticed more top end power, but I still wanted prove that it did something, so I went back to the track and a tear ran down my face when I saw a 15.9
15.9 in the 1/4 is not that bad when you have a burned out clutch and a bad motor mount.

No offense but there is no way you dropped .7 sec off your time by hollowing out your cat unless it was almost completely plugged. Hollowing out your cat will not give you ~70hp. what were your trap speeds? You probably had better launches, or you were a better driver the second time. Plus a new hi-flow cat or a test pipe will produce more hp.

yeah,… I was defenetly a better driver that time I ran 15.9,… i didn’t have too much wheel spin.
My trap speed was 86.28 mph, but I hit redline in 3rd just alittle before the finish line. (before hollowing the cat, it didn’t hit redline in 3rd),… I would of made it to 90 mph if I shift to 4th(maybe)
My reaction time was .946
first 60’ 2.428
330 was 6.750,… what is 330???
1/8 … 10.285
MPH … 69.63
1000 … 13.330
1/4 … 15.909
MPH … 86.28
Yeah,… no doubt I was a better driver that time, but at least I know is possible to hit 15.9 in my car.
what was your trap speed on the 16.6?

it was …
R/T … 1.181
60’ … 2.591
330 … 7.088 <---- please tell me what 330 is.
1/8 … 10.777
MPH . 66.40
1000 … 13.950
1/4 … 16.613
MPH … 84.81
its 330 ft, I think.
Ben
i have i/h/e and put a good clean stock cat back on. my butt dyno tells me my high end on the freeway is really lagging. i couldnt really tell if i got low end back. with my friend with me, i felt 80mph+ was very laggy and the motor was struggling, but i was still able to leave an eclipse spider in the dust hehe
anyways, no big deal as i rarely ever drive that fast. getting rid of the smell is more important. if anything ill just get a carsound and some mandrel bends for the midpipe.
i had the experience of a hollowed cat on my 200sx i gutted it out then drove it like that for a while and it sounded like a damn rotory all poppy. then i got sick of the noise so i welded a pipe into the inside of the cat and it was like night and day. the power was a whole lot better with the pipe in it.

so youre saying the turbulence/low pressure area of a gutted cat is the culprit? makes sense…
yeah it felt smoother, it sounded like it was almost backfiring in the cat then going through the rest of the exh.
hell with the cat
hollowing the cat was the best thing i did for my car, i got huge top end gains when i toke the cat and muffler off and run on straight pipe, l ost a little low end, but as soon as im in the high range you cant get me, thats why i have slicks

yeah but it must sound like ASS
Here’s what I did in my situation. . . I have I/H and i was puttin on my exhaust, so i was like, why not cut out the cat while i’m at it? My dad’s suggestion was to take a wood drill bit (its flat, a couple inches wide) and cut through the middle with that, leaving the rest of the cat intact. It actually seemed to work really well. . . It coughed up some ceramic dust for the 1st day or two, but other than that it seemed to work great. No backfire or anything, it was really loud though, but I have tanabe exhaust, so that explains part of it. Picked up my friend from his place, his mom could hear my car 1.5 miles away. . . LOL

thats good i thot about doing that as well but decided to just go all the way.funny, even with a hollowed one my exhaust wasnt noticeably louder… now taking out the silencer, that made it friggin loud
Yeah, I’m talkin about w/out the silencer. . . The only time I have that in is for emissions testing. . . Speaking of. . . I neglected to do that, and now my registration is suspended.:dead: I suck
