exhaust under car, like race cars?

i was thinking about this idea for awhile: right after the cat, have some piping straight for several inches then mount your [canister] muffler there. so its basically like a race setup but you still have the cat so its still legal. and i believe it would help flow because you do remove less bends, creating better flow, producing a little more power up top.

im looking for someone to critize it because it was just a half-assed idea and there could be some things that i would need to work out if i did go through with it.

Why? Is the extra 1 hp gain you would have be a good enough reason to have the thing scrape on EVERYTHING? It would also resonate in the cabin and vibrate everything.

How about it won’t fit unless you raise your car up.

koo thanks for the responses, guess im not going through with it.

ummmm my friend did that…shaved off 4 10ths of a second off his best time.

i drove from eugene OR to freemont CA with that exhaust…needless to say it was a big mistake…VERY LOUD!!!

oh and my car is slammed like 3.5 inches and i scraped 1 time…

so i only reccomend thie for race purposes only…but y not run open header…i now do that:p

4 10ths…i think thats kinda alot, unless he maybe had like a turbo or was pushing sum big HP numbers. what else did he have in his car?

haha…spoon motor:p …good question…now im sure you find it a little easier to belive:)

ALSO…

If you exhaust ends while underneath the car, you are gonna hear a lot of extra noise.

i dont really mind sound because i already gutted out the back and now im in the process of taking all the soundeadening material out.

how much was the spoon motor? and got any pics of it. id love to see it

there will be more than a little noise…i have ran this setup and it is very loud!!!

i dont know the exact cost on the spoon motor, but it was A LOT…and i dont have any pics…really it just looks like any other b18c…except for the yellow valve cover, and the sweet looking spoon header…late

what kind of exhuast did you run?

custom made race exhaust…about 1 foot of 2.5 inch pipe and a universal 5zigan fireball muffler…with a silencer on street…and it was hella loud:p

nice setup, i think ill still go that route

ok…but i do warn you that it is HELLA LOUD!!! not super bad on regular street driving, but u still may get pulled over…it is way worse on highway, u will need ear plugs…

:stuck_out_tongue: good luck, let me know how it goes:p

What I was thinking was somewhat similar

Well I was thinking how to get the exhaust to flow better and less bends and to exit on the passenger side of the car.

Well since the exhaust is pretty much a str8 line till the end, somehow put a slim muffler near the cat and maybe another one near the end (for noise sake) Then you could get rid of the muffler in the back all together. Maybe get like motorcycle mufflers.

I got this idea while looking at the exhaust system of the new infiniti Q45’s. Those things have like 4-5 mufflers!!! Crazy. But I was thinking that you could fit the motor cycle mufflers basically inline underneath the car, then have just a pipe extension exit the car.

Like this sorta. But I know that near the end the pipe has to go over the suspension piece.

rcnacura: thats a nice idea, very original, but wouldnt it be the same kinda of flow, minus the one turn before it exits on the drivers side? and how much and what kind of sound would a motorcylce muffler give?

I think it would give better flow since motorcylce mufflers are pretty much straight through. Whereas car mufflers have bends and chambers within them.

I think having two of the motorcycle mufflers will quiet the sound significantly plus give you good performance. But I think the sound would sound like a motorcyle. Kinda.

How many CC’s are our engines? Like 1900 right? Hmm. I’ll go see if someone has a big honkin motorcycle with there exhaust with something close to the size of a 1900 CC engine. Those big touring motorcyles and they are REALLY quiet.

id be kinda scared to put on a motorcycle muffler and it sounds all loud and raspy…haha
