Finishing up Swap....couple questions about installation

alright here is what i’ve got: (b17a engine)

  1. There is a small brown connector/sensor on the thermostat housing. The obd1 harness plugs into it, but with my obd0 harness and jumper harness there is nothing to plug into it. Does that sensor need to be hooked up? and what is it?

  2. Setting timing: When i go to start the motor where should iput the dist at? I mean just an estimate and then i can go from there and actually adjust it with the light. Should i back it down so its retarded to be safe? Or should i just center it where it bolts on and then set it? or does it even matter?

thanks guys

I think it is the Coolant temperature Sensor? Just changed the Thermostat on my car and was wondering what that as aswell.

well, in the helms manual it says the engine coolant temperature sensor is located on the side of the head (dist side) along with the ect sending unit. But this pic is clearly the b18a head, not the b17a. However the ect sending unit is in the same place. and there is another sensor on the side of the head that i think may be the ect…however its not located in the exact same place as the one on the pic of the b18a head. My obd0 harness has a plug for both of these 2 sensors on the side of the head…so they are plugged in.

The sensor on the side of the head is an oil temp sensor. I pulled that out once and it had oil on it, then the guy at Autozone told me that it was an oil temp sensor. It made sense to me since it did have oil?
The smaller one that you are talking about is conected to the Cluster and tells you wether the coolant is hot or cold. The one on the thermostat housing is a coolant temperature sensor but i honestly don’t know it’s purpose. Someone correct me if i’m wrong!!!

interesting, if thats the case i may have to do some more wiring…anyone know for sure??

 Why am i mis-spelling everything today
:gun:  :gun2:

Colin, I would put the distributor in the middle, and finish it off with a timing gun.

I guess you didn’t make any marks on it before taking it apart?

no, i didn’t mark it because i was planning to mark it after i set the timing (i’d like to make 3 nice and clean marks to indicate 14, 16 and 18 deg btdc…that way it’d be easy if i ever want to advance/retard quickly for smog, track…whatever).

i’m still trying to figure out the ect and engine oil temp switch problem. i think i have it figured out but anyone w/ some help in this area…wanna lend a hand?

It’s your TW sensor. It’s the sensor that used to be at the back of your non-OBD LS block (the weird looking one with the two wires coming out of the rubber boot). Your non-obd to obd-1 converter should be wired for this. Call me if you have any questions.

mind telling me what “TW” means? Thats what my common sense led me to believe. The stock connector from my obd1 harness had a grn/yel and a black wire, so did the TW sensor on my b18a. I figured since wire colors were the same that they were most likely the same sensor…so thats how i wired it up.

the sensors on the side of the head have a red wire and a green wire (forget the color of the stripe right now), and both heads had the same color so i matched it up…i figured this would be correct, so now i know it is.

Dan, the jumper didn’t have anything for that sensor because i guess its not an extra wire. I’m sure jason isn’t familiar w/ the exact differences of where sensors are on the two motors. Cause all the wiring was there i just needed to swap connectors and add a little extra wire.

Thanks dan!

TW stands for Thermo-Water. It’s your coolant temp gauge. If you just extended the black and green/yellow to the plug on the thermostat housing, that’s correct. That’s what I do with OBD-1 swaps into non-OBD Tegs. Works perfect.

Colin i know what that sensor is now for sure, it’s the sensor that sends a singal to your fans when it is time for them to turn on. Recently my gilfriends car had a problem where the fans where not turning on at all and you could just see the temp guage go up and fast. Then i started looking for the problem and turns out that it is that one sensor so i simply bypased it and now the fans are on all the time. I went to Autozone and asked for it as a TW sensor and they looked at me like i was crazy. what is this sensor really called?

Never mind G2GURU was right it’s called a Thermo Switch
