My car is only getting 200 miles on a full tank of gas, I have a 90 teg with automatic tranny. What can i do to get better gas mileage.

mine too

i can barely get 240 on a full tank with my 92 gsr… but i also rev like a mother and love hitting that vtec… fun. but its always a good idea to change ur spark plugs and use premium gas. most of the time its all the little things that cause decrease in gas mileage. like bad tire pressures, excessive braking n stuff… maintanence is a big issue.

Check (if applicable replace):

  • Air Filter
  • Fuel Filter
  • Spark plugs
  • Spark plug wires
  • Distributor rotor & cap
  • Ignition timing
  • O2 sensor
  • Tire pressure
  • Fuel leaks
  • PCV valve

Just things that are off the top of my head.

I used to get around 200 but then i started to mod car and despite the fact that i drove the car alot harder i was still getting around 200 with i/h. Lately i put in iridium pluygs, cta-back, and chipped auto ecu and i am getting 240, so i’m not too sure which one exactly made the diff but i’m def happy .

i thought if the o2 sensor wasn’t functioning properly the check engine light would come on… or is that just if it isn’t working at all?

i usually get around 20 or so miles to the gallon… but for half a tank i drove very lightly and got about 24 (shifting under 3k almost every time with the occasional high rev) i have found, i think… that the longer i drive without using vtec the better gas mileage i will get… but if i use vtec more often i get less… ok… let me try to explain that better :slight_smile: on 1 tank of gas… if i engage vtec 3 times… one at 1/4 tank one at 1/2 and one at 1/4… i will get worse gas mileage than if i just do it three times around 1/4 of a tank

the o2 sensor can go bad, but he check enginelightwill come on if it doesnt work entirely. the o2 sensor gets clogged, and the reading will become less and less accurate becuase it will detect less o2 in the gas, becuase it is geting clogged by carbon. so the ecu gives the car too much or not enough gas, which results in poor gas mi and that sort of thing.
