Goal of getting to 200 whp? opinions

well, for starters i want to get to 200 whp.

I currently have a JDM b18c w/ aem cai, skunk2 manifold, JDM ITR headers, Clutchmasters stage III flywheel and clutch, Tanabe Hyper Medallion exhaust.

im curious what to do with cams because i want something that can be daily driven and be my weekend warrior. Ive seen a lot of guys get good results with the Jun III’s. How practical are they for a car that is daily driven??? pending on if they will be ok for daily driving I was planning to go with those along with a Hondata program so I can get someone to modify my pr3 ecu on the dyno to get the maximum out of those cams. Other than that I was planning to get a FPR.

With JUN III’s cams and camgears, springs, retainers, Hondata tuning, and a FPR along with lots of tuning on a dyno is it a feat that can be attained with those mods???

are u planning on having the head ported/polished?
i dont know much about jun cams, but i’ve driven Dan’s (g2guru) teg, and he has Toda cams in his… very impressive!
I think it is possible to get 200 whp from your teg, but its gonna take $$$, work, and tuning. looks like ur on your way to getting there.

200 wheel horsies = 230-240 crank ponies
not easily done without FI on a 1.8 liter motor.
hell not easy on a 2.0 either.
You’ll probably want to push your compression up to the limits of 92 octane if you need that magical number.

I personally wouldn’t mind stopping at 199 or 198.
But thats just me.

Compression,Compression, Compression…you can have all the hardware necessary but without the right tuning and compression your going to fall short. Do your self a huge favor and set a more reasonable goal for yourself. The 200 mark has killed the spirits of many enthuiasts and its amazing how hard that last 5-10 hp can be to make.

I think that is a reasonable goal…

i think with proper tuning these cams are remarkable from what every body claims. If i need high compression to make these cams really work do you think a spoon one layer headgasket and some high compression pistons along with those cams will get me to that magical number???

Acurism: I am very aware of the possibilties of Juns. I just wanted to caution you or anyone else who is trying to build that “200+” NA motor. The 200 mark is obviously a nice round # and it makes for an easy goal to shoot for, but keep things realistic. High-end hp is not the most important thing and if your talking to somebody like me you’ll probably hear things like stick with OEM cams and keep the compression in the mid to high 11’s. I’ve seen a lot of people add all of the right ingrediants and not end up with the same results. The 200 mark is not impossible, but 190s are probably alot more common. It sounds like you’ve got the right ideas, but just keep an open mind and be patient. Oh, and port the hell out of that head if you go with the III’s…

I have to agree with Jason on this one. Although I haven’t dynoed my car yet (which believe me is in the plans as soon as I get it back and rebuild my tranny), I am kind of skeptical on wheter or not I will break 200whp. My 13.8 second quarter mile time with the car weighing in at 3000lbs. (with me in the car) says I should be close. But we’ll see. I’ll believe it when I see it.

My friend with all JUN stuff in his ITR (JUN III cams, JUN ECU, JUN Header, JUN Flywheel, JDM ITR pistons…etc) pulled 198whp on the dyno. Close…but not quite there. We were both disappointed that he didn’t break the 200whp mark, but still impressive.

I guess what I’m saying is that it’s great to have a goal like that. Aim high, but if you fall short don’t let it break your spirit. Go back to the drawing board again.

i would like to get in the 180-190 hp area i dont know if its possible with out lots of cash i dyno the car a year ago this is what i had
b18c
aem cai
dc header 4-2-1
greddy exhaust
apexi afc
my car dyno at 157 hp to the wheels and 118 of torque
my added mods since
itr cams
skunk2 itr manifold
spoon cam gears
vortech fpr
cam gears are set at zero no tuning yet next mods i want to get before tuning
chipped ecu
rc bored tbody
rc 270 injectors
i hoping with all this stuff i will be pushing over 180 to the wheels i think if i dont reach it i will portflow to the head and put a spoon head gasket what you guys think
JOE
also how hard is it to mod a jdm itr header to a g2???

Thanks alot guys:D

I pretty much knew what I wanted thus far but I was kinda wondering next should i do this or should i do this…

when you get to the point where you don’t know what you want to do next and you don’t want to waste your money on something useless that really isnt going to help you out.anyway ill keep you up to date with my road to 200 as long as $$$ permits. i hope to get my car dynoed within the next couple of weeks so that will also help me decide what path i should go next. anyway thanks

just wanted to share my opinion on things. i personally believe that NA is the way to go but i chose N20. i’m a poor student with a need for quick lap times:) i first started out with the i/h/e cams, gears, iginition, then came to a crossroad. i feel that i am responible enough to use nitrous and when weighing out the hp gains/$ it far out weighed everything. yes u may say that the big bill is yet to come but i’ve taken my time and hopfully minmized the risk. i should be right around 200hp… fingers crossed:)

i think this is a good thread with some good information from people.any suggestions appreciated.
here is my set up in the works:
-91 ls block, B18c1 head
-CTR .25 over pistons (compression should be around 11.7:1 with piston/head combo)
-skunk2 intake manifold.
-CAI.
-skunk2 cams, valvesprings,retainers
-dc 4>1 ceramic header
-cam gears, fuel rail, FPR,
-P28 ecu, (skunk2 or mugen programed not sure yet)
-2.25" exhaust (replacing soon also, any ideas???)
-clutchmasters III clutch, aluminum flywheel,
-GSR injectors,
trying to think of anything else…
oh yeah, dyno time.
hoping this combo will get me to that magic number!
any other suggestions? porting or pollishing?
thanks guys

lownteg looks like your teg is very closr to the lucky number with your built ls vtec , im guessing your in 180-190 to the wheels right now but with tuning you might make it give us a update
thanks
JOE

hey thanks joe. i’ll keep everyone posted on what happens with her. i am still looking for a cheap P28 to get reprogrammed. also, if anyone has suggestions or experience with underdrive pulleys, i am wondering if it is a good idea to bother with the crank pulley?
any suggestions?

bryan

sorry for the extra post, but i forgot the port and polishing this week, and the type r oil pump.
peace.

email my friend RyanK(a member here) he can hook you up with a P28 - Ryan@svwh.net
