Going to by painting my car: Need advice (Pic intensive)

oh, did u get that bumper cover off of a 4dr??

Bumper cover is the original bumper cover (90 coupe), and you know what, now that I look at the pick-a-part :stuck_out_tongue: vehicle list, the bumper support was from a 91 sedan :bang:

yea, that’ll do it. i almost made that mistake before… sucks man. its hard finding good condition supports for the rear!

Yes it is, either accident or rust it seems… I’m pretty sure pick-a-part didn’t have any decent one’s for coupe’s, if you see one there let me know

had similar problems when my car was hit in the rear and it ripped the bumper in half.
my support was all rusted so i went looking for a full bumper.
pick n pull here in tallahassee had 4 or 5 tegs but the only 92 was white and pretty beat up.
took me a while but i ended up finding a red 91 with mud flaps AND no rust at all on the metal, perfect condition.
sanded and painted it gloss black, went on easy.

I’d still like to swap it for a 92 bumper but it looks alright.

just have to keep looking around, you will find what you need.

Found one! 25$ for everything (including a rough cover). Was missing a stud so I used some epoxy to put a new one on.

ouch.

they both look chewed up.

i still need to pull my front bumper off and check to see if its bent in an inch+ in the middle from an accident.
doesn’t seem to sit right and there’s a gap where the hood closes.

i kinda hope it is, i will go back to the car i pulled the rear bumper off and grab the front. at least then my 92 teg will have matching 91 bumpers :stuck_out_tongue:

Just got back from painting the roof. And to my dismay I have a ridiculous amount of orange peel (that is why I started on the roof since I anticipated this might happen, since the roof is easy to wetsand!)

I was using about 40 PSI of air pressure for my HVLP gun that is rated up to 43. I played around with the amount of clear being sprayed but to no avail (on my 2nd coat I tried this, after having more orange peel than an orange on my first coat).

Any specific advice?

Higher pressure helps clear lay down… I think I spray clear @110psi.

Even though my gun has “working pressure of 8-43 psi” ? Should I be being a non-HVLP that goes up to 110?

Depending on what gun you use it.
I.e Sata 3000 29-30 psi on regulator (2 bar on most regulators)
The iwata lph400 I use for clearcoat runs at 13-17 psi.

example : compressor running at 110psi – regulator on gun between 15-30.

Don’t go over 30psi. it’s illegal in most states due to the large amount of organic compounds it spews up in the air and you end up getting less material applied

I’ve decided to upgrade my gun after some extensive research I’ve realized that my current setup will never really lay paint down flat. Therefore I’ve purchased this LVLP gun. It has rave reviews on the autobody forums so I thought I’d give it a shot

Guess it’s about time I have an update:

As you can see, the rust here was quite extensive

Taping off to apply the rust inhibitor stuff

Kevlar and Fiberglass reinforced filler

Filled the holes in the handle and door so it’s nice and flush again. Also painted behind the handle with some color matched spray paint I had on hand to make sure all we see is red!

My paint booth!

And of course I forgot that the clear overspray goes EVERYWHERE. So naturally the front half of my car is now overspray city, oh well no biggie as it still needs paint (this is exactly why I painted the roof first, anticipating I’d screw up on something)

Thoughts of the black roof? (cover up the gray and pretend it’s red!)

I forsure need a new gun, this orange peel is brutal (again why I did the roof first, easy to sand)

After wet sand

After two stage polish

So my body work is pretty much all done, hopefully my new gun arrives soon and can be painting by friday!

That is indeed some crazy orange-peel… but the polish looks great. Goood work man.

nice. how long did it take you to wet sand it down and buff it?

That one section probably took 1.5 hrs… But from now on, I will be using my air sander! haha

this is a very interesting thread! and you car looks great so far and i bet the outcome will be amazing.

Another reason you are having orange peel issues is that from the looks of it you are too far away from the panel. 4-6 inches – 70-75% overlap – 1 1/2 ft per second.
doing this you will avoid some orange peel. Also make sure your fluid knob is setup correctly.

Looks good! keep it up. If you have some old fenders or pieces of metal practice on those til you get it down.

What exactly is a correct fluid knob setup
