HELP! leaking oil

The bottom of my oil pan has oil dripping from it and there is a lot of blue exhaust smoke during start ups. I recently got an oil change and he said the drain bolt was hard to come off and might strip soon.

I had a similar problem.I was leaking oil(stains under the car overnight)It turns out that the bolts for the oil pan were loose(a ten year old car and they had never been tightened)also the oil pressure switch was leaking too.The problem with Honda’s is that they use a rubber gasket(for the oil pan) which over time will degrade so keep that in mind as well.As for the blue smoke at start up.There are some additives that you can try to free up your seals but it sounds like the valve stem seals are starting to go.$$

As for the leak should I get a new oil pan, a new gasket, tighten the bolt (which might strip), or take it in a shop. At quick lube, could they get a new pan and/or gasket? I added some STP smoke treatment to my oil today and it smoked a lot today but after I drove it for a while and let it rest, no smoke. Thanx

I went through the same exact problems your having…

oil pan leak - you need to replace your oil pan drain bolt, it’s possible that it’s stripped a little from over tightening. If you haven’t replaced your oil pan gasket, that is more than likely to be causing the leak also. Try using ‘CD2 Stop Oil Leak’ which I’ve used before and it helped out with the leak.

blue smoke - Very Critical… burning oil(piston rings are shot).
you will most likely have to replace the rings or you will lose compression which will require engine over haul. Unfortunately this happened to me on the way to Vegas. I just replaced the entire long block since it’s less time consuming.

Can you tell where the oil is coming from? If it’s coming from the drain bolt, simply replace that. If it’s coming from around the edges of the oilpan bolts, try tightening them first. If that doesn’t work definitely replace the gasket. But you should be able to do it yourself. Although it’s easy to do, it can be very time consuming which equals BIG money from a ashop doing the work at $45-75/hr. As for the blue smoke, try doing a Leak/Down test on the engine. That should tell you if you have any internal damage done. Good Luck.

I agree! Do a test first and pinpoint that leak. I had the same problem as you a few months ago. I thought it was the oil pan gasket, but it turned out to be the oil pressure switch. Try cleaning the bottom of the engine to get rid of the leaking oil, then let it dry and look again. You should be able to pinpoint the problem then.

Good luck,

Oz

P.S. When inspecting, start from the top which means,

  • Valve cover gasket
  • head gasket
  • oil pressure switch/oil filter. They are right beside each other.
  • oil pan gasket/oil pan bolts.
  • oil pan drain bolt.

I’m sure I’ve missed some, but that’s just to give you an idea.
