help with brake caliper

I think I have finally discovered why the piston is freezing in the cylinder. If you know anything about the innards of a brake caliper read on and tell me what you think.
I took the piston out and then tried to lubricate everything just to see if I could get it back in and if that would solve my problem. It didn’t work. So I finally took the piston apart and took the threaded sleeve out of the center of it to see if the threads were screwed(no pun intended) up. The sleeve threaded on perfectly and smoothly with the screw in the center of the caliper. So I used some q-tips and cleaned out any debris or dirt that were on the cylinder walls and tried to get the piston to fit into the cylinder without the inside parts of it, you know just to see if it would slide in and out. Well it wouldn’t go in at all. So I finally took out the o-ring at the top of the cylinder and what do you know the piston slides in and out just fine. I put the o-ring back in and it won’t go in at all. Sooo, tomorrow I go to the acura dealer and hope that they have an o-ring and a new boot for the cylinder for me.

Does it sound like that could be the problem? I discovered a small crack in the boot and I’m thinking that the o-ring must have dried out or whatever and thus not allowing the piston to move around like it should be able to. Please some one tell me I’m on the right track. Thanks for reading. And doesn’t it just figure it would be a part that only costs a few bucks that would be causing all the trouble??

bump!

I bought a pair or remaned calipers when I replaced my master cylinder for about $40 each. I was going to go the rebuild route, but it took 10 min to swap the calipers and another 15 to bleed.

taking the piston out without rebuilding it is a no-no. take it to acura and tell them to rebuild it. but you may need to take it somewhere else because I believe that acura dosen’t wan’t any liability issues so they just replace them. Don’t put it back toghether without getting it rebuilt.

Well thanks anyways for trying to help. Buying a rebuilt caliper was plan B if I couldn’t fix mine. I’m not sure what you’re talking about when you say taking out the piston without rebuilding it is bad because I am replacing all the gaskets and greasing everything the helm’s manual says to so I’m not sure what I would be missing.

what your talking about doing is a rebuild. Just be sure to use brake fluid to lubricate the piston when you reinstall it.

It’s funny you mention that because last night when I started putting everything back together with the new gaskets I hadn’t read that step in the helm’s so I had trouble getting the piston in. Then when I coated the piston with brake fluid it went in just like it was supposed to. Thanks for the help guys.
