how do i hook up an autometer electric temp gauge

i have a autometer electric tempature gauge and ii need to know where to hook up the sender and do i need any other fittings besides the ones that came with the gauge.

Temp gauge for what? tranny, radiator, oil, cylinder head, exhaust, etc?

its for the radiator

The way I’m planning to hook up mine (just came today, woohoo!), is to just drill a hole in the upper or lower part of my radiator (the solid sections, they’re plastic on the stock radiators), and then just tap the hole and thread and seal the sender in the hole. That’s the easiest way I can come up with to do it. Anyone else have any other suggestions? I haven’t looked too hard at my cooling system though, so I’ll see if I find a better mounting place. You shouldn’t need any other parts that what came with the gauge/sender, but depending on how you install it, you might find you’ll need some basic hardware store stuff possibly. The other thing I’m contemplating is making a tube fitting that I’ll basically splice into one of the radiator hoses that would hold the sender as well, I’ll have to see which I finally deceide to do. Good luck

DON’T DRILL INTO YOUR RADIATOR!!!

Our cars run on a completely sealed coolling system,If you drill a hole into the radiator chances are a leak will develop. Unless you find a way to hold the pressure from the radiator, you will probobly develop a leak.

I realize they are pressurized. They’re also not usually pressurized over 20psi, so I was figuring if I sealed the fitting properly (like epoxied it in place or something), along with threading it in (granted there would probably only be like 2 threads or so holding it given the coarsness of the thread and the thinness of the plastic), that it would probably have enough strength to hold up to the pressure of the radiator. Anyone have any firsthand experience doing this? Where else could you put it other than inline in the hose in a custom fitting?

I havent posted in awhile, but I will help out on this one…

I have put in three of these units so far… and what I do is.

A: cut a small section of the upper radiator hose out
B: get a small… SMALL like 3 inch long piece of stainless steel plumbing in the proper diamter
C: flare the ends with an exhaust flaring tool (had one…)
D: drill hole for the sending unit
E: Tap the hole
F: screw in sending unit with a thin THIN coat of high temp silicone
G: insert the flared piece into the radiator hose ends. If you flared it ENOUGH, it will be a VERY tight fit. Then hose clamp it

easy peezey. FYI: I am running a VDO gauge in my subaru right now…

is there any other way to hook up this gauge my stock one is broke and i realy need to know if im going to overheat or not what about where the stock sending unit goes?

The stock sensor/sending units are on the side of the block that the radiator hoses go into. they should be just behind (towards the firewall) the upper radiator hose, there should be two. I’m pretty sure the front most (towards the radiator) one is the sender for the gauge, so you could potentially remove this one and hook up your autometer gauge. I’m not 100% positive on this, since I’ve never tried it, but it looks that way from the helms manual. Good luck
