how to get shift boot off?

im getting my short throw in the next few days, so i need to know is do i have to take the boot off to do it. if i do i need to know how to get it off. it looks to me like i could get it off without take the whole console off, but im probly wrong. anyways i’ll tell you how it goes, some pics too.

hey man, ummm… if it is anything like the 92-93 boot, then all you do is…

  1. Take the rubber ring around the bottom of the boot off.
  2. Unsrcew the shifter knob.
  3. Slide the boot over the top of the shifter.

I may be wrong but that is how i got mine off.

You don’t have to remove the shift boot to install a short throw shifter. Just unscrew the shift knob. You remove the factory shifter by taking out the linkage bolt and pulling down on the shifter from under the car. It pops out and you use the plastic piece off of the factory’s shifter on the new shifter and push it up into the car. don’t be suprised if the shift linkage hits the heat shield after the new short shifter is installed.

ok, i know how to put the shifter in, i’ve done it to a few different cars but not a g2. now does the plastic/rubber ring around the boot just pull off? is it bolted in or anything?

if your dead set on removing the boot here is the instructions.

remove drivers and passangers lower dash panels.

remove the center console. you have to unscrew the shift knob to be able to completly remove the console.

Turn over the center console at the bottom there are 2 phillips head screws that hold the boot on. Remove the screws and pull down and up and the boot will be removed.

You do not have to remove the boot to change the shifter!
all the nuts and bolts are accessable from under the car.
