Alright, I have a stock motor, and about $1500, how would I go about building up a motor. From what I’ve heard, to start off I would get fuel pump, bigger injectors, fuel rail, pistons, rings and rods. I’m not really looking for a crap load of power, I’m only going to go 8-10 psi and then I’ll leave the turbo alone. so is there anything else I should get? anything I won’t really need? and any other ideas? I’m totally new to this so if you can help it’s appreciated.
well, first off, you’re on the right track, because i can guarantee you that you’re not going to leave it alone at 8-10 psi. you’ll get bitten by the boost bug and wanna turn it up. dont’ worry, happens to everyone. ![]()
on that kind of a budget, i’d recommend Eagle rods or Crower’s Econobillet rods. Both are H-beam design, forged rods that can be had for around $350-ish a set. www.crower.com is a good place for the crower rods, and www.importparts.com sells the eagles.
pistons (which usually come with pins and rings) i’d recommend JE. you’re going to pay just a bit more for them, but it’s worth it. they are definitely among, if not the, strongest piston out there for our cars. VERY good quality.
a 255lph fuel pump, 440cc or higher injectors (RC engineering, can be found also at importparts.com), and a rail and adjustable FPR should just about round up the raw materials.
Don’t forget bearings, whether it be honda OEM (bought at the dealership) or ACL bearings (very good quality brand, but only available for specific color-codings of honda bearings…not all are available, but if yours are, i’d recommend ACL’s). Since you have the engine apart, it’s a very good idea and inexpensive insurance to replace bearings now. $125 may seem like a lot on top of what you’re already spending, but when you realize that a spun bearing can cost you thousands in rebuild dollars not to mention downtime of your car, it’s an easy $125 to spend.
Finally, don’t forget a few extra dollars to offer lunch for engine-smart friends who may be available for the rebuild. An extra pair of hands or an extra finger to smack with a hammer is always helpful to have around. ![]()
edit: you’ll also obviously need engine management, as well as all your parts for your turbo kit. i didn’t mention them because they aren’t part of the actual bottom end buildup you were asking about. also, keep in mind that you’ll need a much stronger clutch and maybe also a new (ligher) flywheel.
Here is a great website for building a custom turbo setup. www.coolazz.tripod.com/turbo.html
i’ve got some rc 310’s for sale…which are good for about 9-10psi. i’m selling them pretty cheap b/c i need to pay some bills. I only want $230shipped for them. they are two months old. perfect for your setup. brand new they are at cheapest $78/piece…if u want them or are interested, e-mail me at jtsintegra@aol.com
