How toast is my engine?

I popped the hood to my baby today and noticed that there was a film of sludge starting to acumulate all over the engine block. I’m almost sure that my gaskets are shot…

How toast is my engine?

burnt toast.

kidding. is it just from the bottom of the head down? if so, your head gasket’s blown. if you have much mechanical experience, you can do it yourself (or if you just have a helms manual). I’ve never done it on an integra, but I think it would take about a day if you did it yourself (assuming you had the proper tools).

As for your engine, as long as it hasn’t been run really low on oil, or if the antifreeze and oil haven’t mixed, it should be fine. You’ll know more once the head’s off.

If the leak only starts at the bottom of the valve cover, that’s an easy one to replace.

There’s also grime on the fuel rail and injectors as well. Most of it is on the bottom end though.

Also, my engine drinks oil and I think is starting to burn a bit as well. The engine has 201,000 km’s on it.

Looks like I’m going to have to get a new engine soon

201,000km? it’s just hittin puberty… still got another 300,000 left on it.

Sounds like you won’t know how much work it needs til you get inside it… You might just need a couple gaskets, or you might need piston rings and a new head… who knows?

Really though, there shouldn’t be anything too major wrong with it at 201,000km unless you’ve had it tweaked quite a bit to run at really high compression, or turbo’d or somethin. I’m at 207,000 now, and I did a tune up at 200,000. Runs like new and the only leak I can see is the oil pan gasket. Not actually dripping oil either, but the whole thing is grimy…

Anyways if you’re about to tear into your engine, be prepared to spend a bit of money. Even the head gasket alone is about $110 CDN from acura. And if your budget allows it, it’s a prime opportunity to do some major performance modifications.

Yeah… I might open her up just to take a look.
As for OEM Honda parts, my uncle is the New Car Manager at one of the local Honda dealerships, so I get stuff at cost
