key gets locked in ignition, have to restart once or twice

lately sometimes when i turn off the engine the key wont come out as if i forgot to shift into park or something. when i turn it to the ON position, it wont even shift out of park. the only way to release the key and shifter is to actually restart the car once or twice then it unlocks and everything is fine. any ideas?

Maybe check the shifter switch (on the passenger’s side of the shifter, you have to take the center console cover off), also check the shift lock solenoid (on the drivers side), and maybe the ignition lock solenoid (part of the key switch mechanism). I’d check the shifter switch first, since it’s easiest, then the shift lock, then last the ignition key lock. I’m not sure if those will help solve your problem, but they are involved in what you’re talking about. Good luck

That happens to me sometimes, I just turn the steering wheel left and right and it usually comes out

no im familiar with the wheel lock thing but its not it. may be related tho. thanks ill check out the shift/ignition linkage tomorrow

I your key is really worn, that might be part of the problem. If your car is newer than a 91 you can take your vin to acura and they can cut you a new one. I think you need prof of registration or something. Not sure how much it is, but if you check what the other people said and that doesn’t help, you might try it.

Actually, on your original key from Acura (if you still have it) there is a serial number on it. Give it to your Acura dealer and they will make you an exact copy of it (not the ghetto sanding way) with a snipping device that looks something like a cross between a can opener and tin snips. It costs approx the same as getting one ground but is EXACT.

right, that is what I was talking about they can also do it with your vin number like I said.

ah nice. ya im actually using a copy of the original, which was already worn anyways. so it should cost a few bucks?
