Lack Of Heat In The Morning!!!!

In the cold weather (@32F or colder) the car does not produce enough heat to defrost ice or snow on the front winshield.

The car is parked outside all winter, I would hate to think what will happen when the temp gets down to - 15F to -20F.

Is this a common prob. or is mine the only one with this headache!

I had the thermostat changed to (192F)… everything else checked out ok… Still it take a long time for the engine to produce heat!

After driving 1/2 hour or more …heating is fine!!!

If anybody has any ideas/sugestions or how to correct/improve this condition I would be more the glad to hear from them.

Thx Guys

Cheers,
Phil

how long do you let it heat up in the morning? It should normally take 10 mins or until the temp gauge starts moving up… about 15-20 mins to completely melt the windsheild…

Well the heat comes from the engine. And when you are driving you are making the engine work harder, therefore producing more heat, and that is what defrosts the windshield good. You could really use a cover for your car. I know, they cost about $120 for a good one, but its worth it.

That’s the problem…I can let it run first thing in the morning for 1/2 hour or more and the temp gauge still stays at “C”. It will only move once I start to drive the car… problem is… it’s hard to see.

Maybee I need to get a big wool blanket to keep it warm!!!

Thx for your help!!!

I think your teg would like that… who says cars have no feelings?

Is the cold idle program running when you start it? It should run about 1500 rpm until the guage reads warm, hen drop down to the norm 750 rpm.

Get a heat-resistent cover. I think that those things keep warm while they are on and reflect sun-rays in the day.

maybe it’s time to replace your thermostat… that could be why it’s taking so long to warm up. I just changed mine last week, an I’ve been getting very very hot air into the car now.

after the car has been warmed up, when you turn the heater all the way hot, is the air coming in really hot… or just warm?

also when it’s kinda cold out… after you’ve been driving normally an the car is warmed up… give it a nice run through the gears… an if the temp guage drops down a bit, it could be a sign of a stuck open thermostat.

Cover the windshield with a towel. Hold it in place w the wipers. Then in the morning just take it off. You could switch to de-icing windshield washer for the winter. They don’t freeze up.

Lack Of Heat In The Morning!!!

Teg90rs=
I do have winter windshield fluid!!! when ice or snow is on the windshield the wipers are frozen to the glass I need to scrape the ice/snow before I can use them…

I just had a new therm. installed…it helped…but still warm air (not hot) comming from vents…after driving for 20min or more the heat is fine…but if its snowing, then its very hard to see…needless to say you can’t really drive fast in this weather.

Cold idle does work in the morning around 1,500-1,700 rpm. After 5min it drops down to 750 or so…The temp gauge still stays @ “C”…

By the way, the rear glass defrosts within few min. with elec. defroster on…thinking of switching rear glass to front and vise versa…

Has enybody had a block heater installed? If so, does it help, is it expensive?

thx for your help!!!

hey dammit be thankful you have cold and snow. i’m a snowboarder (granted it doesn’t help the hobby living in iowa but hey) and you wanna know what happened last night when we were going to get this huge snowstorm? IT WAS A DAMN THUNDERSTORM! IT RAINED!!! that doesn’t HAPPEN in iowa in december dammit!!!

I WANT SNOW!!!

okay sorry had to vent. but um…maybe a coolant tester? check to see what your coolant/antifreeze is rated at, you may want/need to add some more glycol (coolant) into the mixture to help it warm up faster (lower the freezing point thus making it a lil easier to warm up).

I have a block heater installed and it helps quite a bit. Up here in northern Alberta, it can get past -40 C so it’s pretty important to have one. It doesn’t make that much of a difference when it’s not that cold, but past -20 or so, it makes a huge difference (heat wise and starting the car). If you wanted one that heats your car up faster, I’ve heard of one that keeps the coolant warm instead of the engine block. I don’t have that kind but you might want to look into it. Hope that helps.

WANT SNOW!!!

“I WANT SNOW!!!”

Thx for your tip Mark(zoomintegra).

The antifreeze is good down to -45F.
I will try the block heater…and see how that tourns out…as per(srfanatic)

Regarding wanting snow, let me share my winter adventure with you!!!

Last Sat. morning, cold about 25F snow and ice ouside. About 7:00am as my usual routine, I take the dog for a walk. German/collie cross about 125lbs. As we walk out the door, on to the driveway all, of a sudden the dog takes a flip, ends up doing a 4 legged splits, just like “BAMBI”.
Damn ice!!!
He turns towards me and gives me a dirty look like: What the #!% did u do that for? Seeing that he can’t get up, I walk over and pick him up. Just as I start to walk back to the house, I slip and fall backwards with the dog on top of me!!!
Damn ice!!!
After seeing many stars/hearing lots of birds I make my way back inside the house. Check the dog over, he’s ok. Give him some dog treats, and try this all over again.
This time, as soon as I get the leash the dog runs away!!! After a while with cookies in hand, we do end up outside (staying away from the driveway).

Sooooo you want snoooooow???

Sorry for the long post, it just seemed appropriate to share with you.

Cheers,
Phil

well, it IS the main ingredient in our giant snow-penises we sculpt in the front lawn of our beloved Iowa State University president.
