Lightening Stock LS Flywheel?

I’m looking for some info on lightening an LS flywheel. How muc is too much to have taken off? Also does anyone know a place in the GTA that does this?

i just had mine done. $160 for lighten, balance and resurface. took it from 18lbs down to 13lbs.

i just got a quote from around here for 128 for lightening, balancing, resrufacing

hey g2 i live in saugga too… tell me where you got it done.
and btw what type of clutch are you runnin

stock is 19lbs.

not safe to go past 13lbs.

Anthony,

I haven’t been updating myself in the Ontario scene. The one lone speed shop that I can recommend is Magnus Motorsports. They specialize in DSMs and RX-7s, but a flywheel is a flywheel. As long as you know what you want, they’ll do it for you.

There was a speed shop in 'sauga/oakville border, but I forgot the name, and I forgot the name of the intersection. All I remember is south on Winston Churchill. You know as soon as you cross Southdown Rd heading west on Lakeshore, the street turns into something else. Something Royal. Anyway, what would be LakeShore and Winston Churchill is the major intersection, and they are a few buildings south of that (on Winston Churchill).

Regards,

Oz

from stock, LS flywheel at 18lbs, safe to go as low as 13lbs…

how low can you go, safely, with a stock b16 flywheel?

i’ve read on the boards that the b16 flywheel is aprx. 2 lbs lighter than the LS flywheel.

so would the b16 flywheel be safe to go 2 more lbs lower as 11lbs? or since it is also a stock flywheel, would be safe to go as low as 13lbs?

anyone know any places in cali that can/have done it? any good/bad reps? how much was it?

im guessing not just any machine shop can do the lightening, balancing, and resurfacing…

my assumption would be that both would be safe at the same weight and that you can’t go lighter with the b16a/b17a flywheel, or at least not much.

check out the pics in this thread: http://www.g2ic.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=51316

The main difference in weight between the two is the removal of material from the back, which is what they do when they lighten it. So a b17a flywheel is almost like a lightened ls flywheel. As you can see from the pics there are a couple other small differences that cause the b17a flywheel to be lighter, but i’m pretty sure these are fairly minimal in comparison to the weight taken off the back… and maybe the lack of material in these areas actually make the b17a flywheel a little less safe when lightened? I have no idea…just something maybe to consider?

Lastly, I’ve seen places that will lighten your flywheel to 11-12lbs. I have never heard any specific stories of there being any problems when they are that light. But the general concensus online is that 13lbs is a safe weight. Its quite possible that lighter is still safe, but w/o any real solid knowledge, I didn’t want to press my luck. I’ve been running my 13lb b17a flywheel for over a year now, no problems. Dan was running a 13lb ls flywheel for quite awhile and had no problems.

yikes you guys pay a lot to get that done.

My buddy is an engine machinest and only charged me 30$ (Canadian) to lighten/resurface my flywheel at his work.

hmm, maybe its cause we don’t have a buddy who works at a local machine shop.

Did you have it balanced as well? I hope you just forgot to mention that… because its essential to having a safe flywheel.

yeah it was also balanced.

I was just shocked to hear thats how much it actually cost to get done.
He’s doing all the machine work on my new motor as well, and p&p the head and saving me a ton of money.

could he hook up the discount for me?

I paid about $170 or so after taxes. To bring my flywheel down to about 14lbs, that included balanceing and resurfacing the flywheel. Running OEM clutch

But this is in Waterloo and the only place willing to do it. So far no problems. It’s been in almost a year now.

In the GTA check out http://www.leitnerbush.com/ I’ve heard nothing but good things about them, but I have never dealt with them personally.

my flywheel is 8.5lbs!!! and its seems to run safely for me…but i have aftermarket flywheel and not a shaved stock flywheel!
