ls/vtec turbo question

ok im getting a deal on an ls/vtec so my turbo plans have changed just a little…question is do i use my ls tranny or do i get a short geared tranny? which would be better for daily driving and the occasional run to the track…and does anyone know if the s1 or y1 are short geared…i found a guy with each and he says they are but i dont know…thanks alot!!

im not sure about the gearing on cable trannys but ill tell you i use to run a ls tranny on my ls turbo…it fine untill i blew it the hell up and bought a gsr tranny…car felt much quicker. i loved it. i believe it shorter gears but nothing stupid short like b16 gearing. (remember im talking hydro not cable)

I had the s1 tranny and they are way to short.

I’m running a J1 tranny(shortest cable gear ratio) with a LS/vtec turbo, shorter gears are the best gears. I also ran this tranny with a NA 12.5:1 comp LS/vtec. anyone who says differently hasn’t a clue. The fastest street honda(10’s on radials) on TR.com is running a JDM itr tranny with an LS 5th gear. If you bitch about traction, thats what an LSD and BIG tires are for.

oh yeah, and the Y1 is definatly short gears. some even came with a LSD.

I guess I should have been more clear.

yes, shorter gears are better for turbo cars. it also depends on your needs, do you drive on the highway a lot? if so, is gas and noise a concern or is speed more important? I drove the highway a lot and the s1 was just to short for me. My teg wasnt boosted tho, but if it were, then it probably wouldnt have bothered me.

on hondas at least, shorter gears are faster on the strip for both turbo or n/a. its all about daily preference and top end requirement.

i prefer the gsr over b16 because i do lots of highway driving but for a car that spends alot of time at the track…short gears are the best. it allows you to run a big tire and still have decent gears. short > long gears for turbo but for me (use to be a daily drive) i prefer medium gears, hence the gsr tranny

I have an ls trans on my boosted ls/vtec (soon to be running). Do you think i will be dissapointed with the performance of it?

im all about driving on the interstate and gas mileage so I may just stick with my ls for now…i wouldnt mind having a gsr tranny but i couldnt find the hasport kit for the tranny conversion does anyone have a link?

no ull be ok but ull be quicker with a gsr tranny

ill look for it tomorrow

i have a ys1(lsd) on my fully built b16 and i will tell you now driving on the highway sucks .it goes through to much gas

judging by this i believe im going to keep my stock ls…im going to upgrade the clutch but is there anything else i need to do to my tranny to make it last?
