machined vs. forged rods

I am still on the search for b17 rods and the ones I can find are either crowers or eagle rods. The crower and eagle rods are made of the same 4340 chromoly steel but the eagle’s are forged and the crowers are machined. the price difference being the eagles are 370 a set and the crowers to being 630 a set. Which would be the smarter buy? And would it help to shot peen the rods still to maximize the surface strength? Mind I am using the rods for a NA application under high compression. Thanks for the input guys!

If you’ve ever seen the difference between the Crower’s and the Eagle rods, there wounldn’t be any question as to which one you would get if money were not an issue. The crower’s construction is far superior than the Eagle rods. Both have ARP Rod Bolts. Both also have free floating bushings for the wrist pins. And even though the Eagles are forged and the Crower’s are just Billet CNC machined, the Crower’s are far superior design. Take a look…

Dan- Would it be better to invest in the rods than other components? Would the eagle suffice for the setup that I am going with? Would the Crowers be overkill? I’d consider getting the Crowers but once again is the 2X price difference really worth it?

Eric, unless you are going turbo (which I don’t think you have any intentions of doing), I would probably go with the Eagle rods. They are better than the stock B17A rods. The Crower’s are a bit overkill. But wouldn’t the Titanium ones be nice :p?

hey Eric if you want the Eagle Rods hit me up i can get a better deal then what you are getting…my e-mail is vietgsuperstar@hotmail.com

hey what is your new setup!

Dan- thanks for the tip. I’m purchasing the eagle ones as soon as I get a god price hopefully from Phil! And mmmmmmmmmm… Titanium sure sounds nice and would sure help the revs a bit… but my pockets only go soo deep and I have a few more parts to get. And I finally found the compressor you mentioned. runs a little over $200 with tax… pneumatic tools… now that’s another thing…

Phil- You got mail!

eagle rods have been used in high hp turbo applications with good success. i wouldn’t hesitate to install them in my motor.

Hey Eric just a heads up Group buy center is having a buy on eagle rods for $339+ $10 shipping I beleive and they have them for the b17.
