Manual Transmission Fluid?

I tried to state it clearly that I heard it and it wasnt my own experience, but I am not going to try somthing in my car that I heard can ruin it, especially when my tranny has 214k on it. So I was just saying what I have read previosly on this same discussion, and stated clearly that it was not from personal experience.

i’ve used motor oil, honda mtf, gm synchromesh and the redline stuff. in order to my preference

gm synchromesh
redline synchromesh
honda mtf
mobil oil.

i hear royal purple and motul make great fluids.

bringing this back from the dead…
is gm the best for a tranny with loads of miles on it? is there any real difference from the penzoil and gm synchromesh?

yeah there is a difference. don’t use the penzoil stuff. my cousin used it on his camaro, shortly after his tranny blew. he didn’t even race that much. his mechanic took it apart and found that the penzoil stuff had left a junkload of nasty deposits(suspect teflon) on his gears that eventually ruined his tranny.

both the gm and redline products are great.

I thought they were exactly the same product, just packaged differently. Must have read that wrong, it was a while back it was being debated.

i always figured it was, but after seeing what it did to my cousin’s car, i will never use a penzoil product again.

I ran Pennzoil synchromesh in both our hondas (2 accords) and now my integra and never had a problem.

FWIW, I’m using Redline MTF. Switched from 10w30 motor oil last year. I like it a lot. I don’t know if it’s hurting anything, but the shifts are nice and slick. I’ll reserve any negative comments until I run into issues. I’ve had the stuff in there for about a year now, but it’s only been 4k miles – teggy doesn’t get much road time nowadays. :tsk:

Nothing against you personnaly but I never believe the stories of look what this oil did to my cousins transmission.
Way too many veriables. What did he run before? How many miles was on it? How hard was he on the car and didn’t tell anyone? bad GM product? The mechanic, was he a GM lover and didn’t want to admitt the tranny sucked? Did the mechanic just like the number 28 havoline race car and blamed pensoil?
you see way too many if’s and but’s to rely on a story like that.
it depends on a lot of things. :salute:

bringing back this subject again, im am getting ready to change my tranny fluid and tranny got 215k on it, 3rd gear is starting to grind a bit and i want some info on this Royal Purple Synchromax. I have RP in my motor and so far im loving it, a bit expensive but worth it in my opinion. So my question is has anyone used RP Synchromax and how do you like it comparing to Honda MTF. I will be going with Royal Purple anyway because i heard good news about them but would like some answers on the forum of people who have used it or are currently using it, Thanks in advance.

Ive got to respond to icemans post about not using penzzoil for anything. everybody has there preference, its mainly important just keeping the oil changed, Every car I own I use penzzoil and Ive never had a motor go out.

I wouldnt use penzzoil in our trannys… I would use honda mtf since honda/acura is so anal about using ONLY HONDA parts…

but I must admit Ive never even changed my tegs tranny fluid…

All my cars have penzzoil in them, since my father left me a 89 truck that was maintaned since new with penzzoil, its got 140k+ on it and doesnt burn a drop
91 toyota pickup 22re 4 cyl 220k+ miles, doesnt burn any penzzoil
91 acura integra, 175k, uses very little penzzoil, maybe a quart at 3k miles
93 dodge stealth, 130k+, massive oil leak mod, but its a mitsu…
98 toyota corolla, 100k, doesnt burn any penzzoil…
90 crown vic motor in my 87 F150 4x4, 130k miles, burns no penzzoil

stick with what works, and keep it changed
Why listen to a GM mechanic anyway.

sorry for bringing this thread back but how often do we change our tranny fluid? I heard 15k to 60k? I got a 91 DA.

I beleive it is changed every 30k? I am not sure but thought I would throw that out there anyways!
I am using Royal Purple Synchromax in my 92 LS, 212,000 miles, Manual.
I also use the same stuff in my wifes 92 Accord Lx Auto, 190,000 miles.

Both Transmissions seem to like the RP. I noticed that my Integra shifted a lot smoother. I drive the car 50 miles a day on the highway and stop n go traffic in SOCAL. I was originally using Valvoline MTF. I had changed it when I bought the car 2 years ago,and once within 20k. When I added the Synchromax, I drained the tranny using a vacu-pump and added enough to flush it out twice. I feel better getting the non-synthetic out of the tranny as best I can before I add the synthetic.
I did the same procedure for the wifes Accord auto. Shifts smoother and has quieted the tranny.

I recommend RP based on my experiences. I found a place that gave me a bulk discount on the stuff since I used it on both vehicles. let me know.

synchromesh

i have a 92 integra with 105,000 miles, didnt have any problems with the transmission when i first put in pennzoil syncromesh at 95,000 but heard it was good stuff.it has been fine ever since. also it fixed my brothers 91 accord grind in 2nd and 3rd that had 180,000 miles on it.

i used the quaker state high milege with slick-50 but i also changed to 10W-40. when i owned a 90 LS it had bad syncros and my mechanic recommended 80W. I was explained to me that the heavier wieghted oil (the W part of oil) would help prolong the life of the syncros when the syncros were worn, however would not make the syncros “feel” new, only replacing would resolve the problem. with the 90 LS and the heavier oil shifting was more difficult and have since had the oil replaced withe same grade and recieved no problems otherwise with the transmission. the quaker state has been in my gsr for 10k miles and i have to notice any problems. any more insight on good idea or bad idea is welcome.

Hi guys! Taking up an old topic… Do you know is the 2.3-2.4 qts which is stated to be the right capacity of the manual transmission oil capacity us qts or imperial qts?? If some of you can mention the right capacity in litres, I would appreciate it. I´m from Finland and we use litres in here, not quarts. I thought to try the redline transmission fluid mt-90.

According to my handy unit conversion widget, 2.3 qt = 2.176 liters. 2.4 qt = 2.27 liters.

(if there’s a difference between litre and liter I dont know…)

HTH!

i’ve read the whole thread and have one question…

would the GM synchromesh work the same in a hydro tranny?..

My last car (85 Prelude), I changed the manual transmission fluid, but had problems a year or two later with it getting very stiff when shifting gears.

In 1992 when I bought my Integra, I have NEVER changed this manual transmission fluid. I may be just lucky, but I’m still driving the same car with 311,000kms, still shifts great with the factory fluid.

Ok, sorry… Litre or litre, I didn´t know how to spell it right. So the capacity is a little bit over 2 liters, ok. I just checked the Integra book of Haynes, and it said that there are two types of quoarts; u.s. and imperial…
