might do a engine swap and auto to 5spd convertion...I have some questions/feedback

I’m really close to putting my car through an engine swap, my b18a1 engine to a b16a1, and automatic trans to manual trans convertion. I found a place that will do both, OUT THE DOOR, for $2600.

MY questions are: How easy is it to pass this engine through smog check, in California? For you guys/gals that did this, does everything work fine, with no mechanical or noise problems? How easy will my previous engine sell? And for how much? My current engine has 134k miles on it…well maintained…purrs like a cat/no noises.

Also, b16a owners…are you happy with your engine after you swapped out your b18a? I want a normally aspirated engine that kicks…no turbo. I read a handful of threads regarding the b16a vs the b18a…and decided to go with the b16a. Can anybody give me a really good reason to NOT get the b16a? My car is a daily driver. I don’t plan on adding a turbo or something crazy.

I might have this done within a month at the most…otherwise, as soon as possible.

help me out…need your thoughts and answers…thanks

Out the Door for $2600 is a really good price given that the engine/tranny/ECU is about $1500. Can I ask where you’re getting this done?

The car will not pass smog - period. You’ll be slipping people green for as long as you own the car to pass smog.

Your engine’s very easy to sell, post it here and people will buy it.

Never pass smog? Ouch! Glad I live in Cali, though that price for the swap is righteous!

…maybe you could sell me a certain…[cough] part [cough] to pay off some of the costs…?

SE-37K–This place is in Sacramento…or somewhere around there. My friend recommened that place to me. One of our other friends had a sr20det put into his '91 240. When I find out more about this place I’ll let you know where exactly it is. It’s supposedly a new place, …they’re trying to get a name for themselves, which is why I think the price is kinda low.

ThaJazz–what up man! Actually, this past few months I was thinking of selling my sedan, and was gonna sell the lip to you for cheap. If I ever do then you’ll be the first to know. Otherwise, you can have the lip for…uh…$2600…heh…sounds good?

another question…so how much extra “green” will it cost to pass smog?

Providing you can afford the"extra green" to pass smog, that is a killer deal. Jump on it if you can. Im gonna install the b16a I have sitting on the floor of the shop someday, but luckily Idaho has no smog regulations, at least where I register my car anyway;)

Hmm, yeah, well, you want to pass smog and all, but you’ll need that swap…so you’ll probably want to sell the sedan. Yeah. That’s what you need to do.

[cough]

Shea, MD’s not to restrictive on smog, either, if I remember correctly. I doubt my gutted cat will pass, though. My wife says the exhaust stinks. I think it has character. But I digress.

another question regarding the engine swap…

Can the headers and intake from my b18a be placed into the b16a? thanks

From what Ive been told, yes.

the intake and header (singular) will bolt right up to the b16a.

as for how much it’ll cost you to smog. Depending on how good of a deal you can get it usually runs $100-$300. Smog is why i’m putting a b17a in my car over all the other options out there.

now I’m just looking for anybody that has a good reason NOT to get the b16a…those of you with this engine, do you have any complaints? How much of a difference in torque can you feel between the two engines? Or can you feel any difference at all(the 8-lbs of torque difference)? I have a sedan, so there might be times I might have an extra person or two riding with me.

Another question, how much better is a hydrolic vs cable clutch?

thanks guys for all the feedback

Another question, how much better is a hydrolic vs cable clutch?

basically no better. to me it seems more like a preference and convenience thing. Don’t even list hydro as an option. It will be too much $$ and work to get it to work. Plus, if you’re like me you like the feel of a cable clutch a little better anyway.

also i hear that the b16 has far less torque than the b18…

thats why im leaning more n more to jus doing a gs-vtec…

ive got a b16 jus sitting here with 0 miles on it ready to go. and now i wanna sell it :bored:

then you’re perfectly setup to build yourself an ls/vtec! starting off w/ a full b16a swap is the best way to go. Use the head, tranny, ecu, intake manifold, and distributor. Then take your b18a block rebuild it, shot peen the rods, arp rod bolts, z10 crank girdle, higher compression pistons and put it all together. Having a complete b16a and b18a from the beginning should make the swap very easy, that way you know you won’t be missing any parts.

 That’s why I bought a complete B16 Longblock to stuff into my B17 block. No one will ever know!!!

Hey did you ever find out anymore info on that shop I live in Roseville which is like 20 mins from Downtown Sac, and want to know where this is because I plan on doing the same thing as you. I thought about doing it my self but im not sure about the Auto to Manual Conversion seems alittle complicated to me. Oh well email me about that shop like what its called and stuff…
It will be a little before i can get 2600.00 but not any longer then the end of summer.

Thanks,
DREW
