is it worth buying the the MSD Distributor for our cars, or should I just keep the stock one and replace the internals (cause it’s just about that time) ?
Well, the MSD you showed is just the cap for our stock distributors that allows you to use an external coil. If you have the money you might want to upgrade to that one and get an external coil as well. I found that it was a teeny bit cheaper to buy the MSD cap and an MSD coil together than it was to just buy a stock replacement coil for my car, so I went with the MSD. The best part about that is that anytime the coil goes bad, you can easily replace it with a cheap one you can find just about anywhere. If you are replacing the everything else in the distributor, you’ll need a new rotor, which the msd cap doesn’t come with, so you’ll need to get one at an auto parts store probably, or maybe just buy the kit that acura sells (that’s all they sell, they don’t sell the rotors individually, just cap and rotor together.) To complete replacing everything, you’ll need a new ignitor/icm, which can be bought at any autoparts store or the dealer (I’d probably go with the dealer on that one, the price isn’t usually much higher, and it’s guaranteed to work like stock.) Good luck
thanks, I’m completely new when it comes this stuff
all I know is that my distributor is squealing and when I do certain things in my car (ie. put windows up/down, brake, etc) my guage & headlights dim (noticeably) also, now my headlights dim on their own w/o doing anything. Plus my battery is brand new, more powerful than the reccomended battery for our cars & I don’t even have a system.
any advice as to what I should do w/ my distributer is greatly appreciated. TIA
Sounds more like it’s a problem with your alternator, not your distributor. You alternator is what provides electrical power for the car as well as charges the battery (which allows the car to start). I’d get your alternator checked out before replacing anything in the distributor, since the distributor only helps control the spark and provides certain info to the ecu, and really has almost nothing to do with the alternator and battery and interior/exterior lighting system. If you have a manual (like a helms, or even a haynes, etc) you can look up in it how to roughly test the alternator, otherwise take it to a shop or dealer. Good luck
Hey about that MSD cap, I have a 90 Teg and I have the MSD 6 box, will that cap fit a 90 teg although it says 92-93 teg?? Please, help. I miss the little power at Top end.
Made friends with a G2 owner in town. Now i guess i have a friend to race with.
I have a 90 teg as well, and I use the MSD cap on it, it fits fine. Just don’t forget you’ll need some kind of coil to power it as well.
Oh, wait, that might not be the right one. I used the one I got from www.summitracing.com on mine, which lists as being the proper one. I’d use that one just in case.
I’ve been told either the blaster 3 or the SS coil are both good, I’m using the blaster 3 on mine. I haven’t been able to really find what the differences are between the various coils as far as performance goes, just about any of them should work though.
