need some suggestions on building a head

Whats up guys…

I’m going to college this august and my car will pretty much be sitting in my garage for the next 4-5 years. So of course, I have plenty of time for a new project. I have a 92 GS and I want to get a V-tec head on it. I wanna completely build the head and then turn my car into an ls/vtec machine.

What I need is suggestions though. What head should I buy? What parts should i replace? what new aftermarket parts should i get? Do you think i should just get a whole new valve train and cams?

I’m obviously going to port and polish the head before I put it in as well. So anyone with suggestions as to what parts i should get, what brands, etc. I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Hey-
If cost is an issue, which it always is for me, just get any b16 head and do a poor mans ITR setup. Pr3 head, switch gsr intake springs to the exhaust side, ITR or portflow intake springs, CTR/ITR cammies and your good. Or if you can, you could just pick up a gsr or ITR head and call it good. The ITR/b16 heads are the same cast, so you can build the pr3 valvetrain to perform like ITR spec pertty cheap, except for the p&p! p&p=$$! Just my 2cents…

Heres some other parts info-

thanks…

the thing is… money is an issue, but not THAT much of an issue. If im gonna build a head for myself, i might as well do it right and do it the best possible way to get the most power and still have a street car.

Just depends how you do it. Dont order CTR cams for like 600 bucks when you know you can get a head for that much.

Know what I mean?

Good luck and have fun on your build.

well, if you have 4-5 years to do this, why just stick with a “poor man’s” anything? especially with ls/vtec (searching for this term is a really good way to learn more about it without me going into a pooload of detail that others already have previously), it’s better to spend $3000 now to do it right than $5,000 later on because you blew your engine.

get a block girdle, forged rods and pistons (go with high compression too for the cams), get the head professionally cleaned and some new (bronze) valve guides installed along with new valve seals. portflow inner valvesprings, ITR outer valvesprings, portflow titanium retainers, skunk2 cams, skunk2 or match-ported b16/ITR intake manifold, your choice of larger-bore throttle body, your choice intake/header/exhaust combination.

at least that’s what my plans include. should be fun.

WHOA there zoom… don’t take it that far… I just want to build a head… not rebuild my entire engine. I think my stock pistons and rods would work ok with the setup… i’m not pushin high boost or anything. or at least not yet

You are sayin 3000 will get me all of that stuff??? I’m not planning on spending 3000 right now… but are I’m having a hard time believing that I can get pistons, rods, intake mani, head, cams, valve train, port polish, etc. for only 3000$.

HERES THE PROBLEM THOUGH

even if i could get all that stuff for 3000… when i get it… i will not have any clue about what to do with it. I have no experience working on engines… Sure I’ve read up on stuff and i’ve seen pictures, but I wouldn’t trust myself in taking my engine apart and putting it back together.

I think i might be able to put together a head if i have 4 years…but i dunno about working with the bottom end.

I think he means, dont spend all your money on a top end and mate it to a tired ls block. It (the high milage bottom end) wont last if you take it to 8k every day. Spend evenly for max reliability.

thats a very good point… but i still don’t get the 3000$ thing

Its my understanding that a stock b18a block cant handle the VTEC head and revving. The main thing everyone does in the LS/VTEC conversions is build up the bottom end to handle revving to 8k.

yep, that’s why i mentioned those things and i probably should have included that info in my description, but i DID have a disclaimer about searching for info as to why i said some things. hehe

anywho…about the 3 grand thing, if you shop around you can get that stuff for about that. maybe a bit more, but even if you don’t get the cheapest prices around still don’t look to spend more than 5 grand. for 895 shipped, you can get endyn pistons/rings mated to eagle rods (and yes there’s a bunch of poo about endyn out there but everyone on honda-tech seems to feel that if you’re just getting larry’s pistons you’ll be okay, just don’t send a head to him or anything. read on honda-tech for more info there i don’t wanna get into it now.), skunk2 stage 2’s are about 750 or so (inlinefour.com has 'em for about that), and then the entire valvetrain should be around 400-ish.

add an ITR IM/TB combo for about 400 (brand new that is, used you can pick up cheaper)…

well, i guess i might have been wrong, because you’ll also want to purchase any and all gaskets and seals that are on your engine along with new belts/water pump etc so incidentals might add it up a bit but as far as the non-incidentals are concerned 3k sounds about right.

now back to my bagel… :stuck_out_tongue:
