Can someone explain why the hydro trannys with the b18c5 (just for example) dont go well with the gen2 tegs? How hard is it to find a suitable tranny to go with the c5 (gearing and LSD) that is cable?
My mechanical knowledge is not supberb, but I am learning.
the reason the hydro trannies don’t work is because we don’t have the hydraulic system in our cars, and installing it would be a pain in the ass…however it can be done.
there are numerous b series cable trannies that will work perfectly for your vtec swap. such as:
-89-91 jdm s1, j1, or y1 (some of the y1’s came w/ lsd)
-92-93 jdm ys1 (some of these came with lsd)
-92-93 usdm ys1
just make sure that the tranny is a VTEC tranny. the letter code does not distinguish whether the tranny is vtec (short geared) or non vtec (long geared), so be careful.
all of those trannies are similar in gearing to the itr (with respect to a non vtec tranny). but there are minor gearing differences between those vtec trannies. here is some info on some of these trannies: http://www.bseries.net/html/specs/btrannyspecs.php
another option if you already have an itr tranny is to get yourself a 92-93 cable tranny housing and modify it to fit the itr gears and lsd.

thanks for the explaination. I have a few more questions, however.
What is the avaliablity of some of these trannies (sorry to be so broad), and where can you get them?
What is the price range for these?
What would be the going price for a GSR hydro tranny? ITR tranny?
thanks for your help.
there are 2 basic sources for these trannies. one would be 2nd hand. just look around for sale boards, www.recycler.comwww.thepartstrader.com and the such. the second would be from jdm engine/tranny importers. typically places don’t like to separate the engine and tranny, however sometimes they sell longblocks w/o the tranny, and in that case they probably have some trannies laying around. Going rate i would say would be $300-$600 depending on condition, mileage, and just overall luck on how good of a deal you get.
i’m not positive about the hydro tranny prices. but i’d expect a gsr hydro to be worth $450-$800 depending, and an itr more like $700-$1000. But i may be off on those numbers, so check around to be sure.
