O2 sensor?

Hey guys, any help would be appreciated… I’m not very knowledgeable yet! My engine seems to be wavering (?) and my dad says its one of the O2 sensors? I know this isn’t very descriptive… but its hard to put into words. Its almost sputtering??? I dunno, but I’m quite distraught. If anyone has any insight, please help me out!:frowning:
Thanx

ill help , try

sputtering is unclear…really, umm does it stumble? hesitate-hesitation is one reason of a bad 02 sensor in some cases.

ill list some more

bad fuel filter
bad fuel pump
bad rotor
bad distributer
bad spark plugs
bad spark plug wires
ignition coil
02 sensor
low on gas(running fumes)
bad catalytic converter(stuffed)

wooo, yeah reply with more info so i can narrow it down

not really a better description?

Okay… you know when a car idles rough… how it idles high, then low, high then low? Well it kinda sounds like that, but when I’m driving. Not really loud or anything, but I’m not noticing any “dead spots” when I’m accelerating. I’m confused, and pissed to say the least.
thanks for your help!

No need to loose your cool rookie! There will always be something to fix or spend money on with older cars. The sooner you accept that the less it will bother you when something is up. This board is a great place to get support and info. When you take it to get it fixed you will already have an idea of what really is wrong and what a fair price is to repair. See ya round the board.

I actually have the same problem with my car. I blew my first motor and replaced it with a '91 Ls but after the swap, I noticed that my car’s idle isn’t right. When the car is running cold, the engine idles at about 1000 rpm while in drive and if I put it into neutral, it revs up to about 1500-1600 and then suddenly drops to a bit under 1000, like around 900 rpm and it does this constantly. The whole time the cars in drive, the rpms go from about 1000 to 1200 constantly. When the engine gets up to running temp. the revs drop to the 750 rpm mark and the car idles very rough and at times, seems like it’s about to shut off. So most of the time, my car is in neutral at just about every stop beacuse then the revs got to about 800 and the engine seems a lot smoother. I’ve been told that the sensors on the engine are bad and need o be replaced but I dunno if that’s just it cus my tach goes crazy as my car picks up speed. Hopefully someone can help me out as well and maybe this better explains TheRookie’s explanation.

yet another description…

Okay, I’m going to try again… It sounds as if the RPMs are fluxuating while I’m driving? The tach reads completely normal and all, but when i listen to the engine its kinda fluxuating?
I misunderstood my dad, its not an oxygen sensor, but he’s sure one of the sensors is screwed. Thanx for your help!
