Hey you B16A people. What does your Tach say when you hit 60mph on 5th gear? And what about 50mph on 5th gear?
Thanks,
Oz

what tranny?
im using a JDM S1 tranny and I can tell you that im at 4000rpm going 60mph in fifth. I dont quite remember 50mph though.
I believe it’s a J1 (at least that’s what the serial number on my paper says). Using a stock tach., I’m revving 3000RPM doing 60mph on 5th gear. I just want to know if my tach is correct or not because I’m idling at 500RPM (I want to rule out the obvious before moving to things like the IACV).
Thanks,
Oz
For mine, S1 on a 90 teg, when my speedometer was working, my tach and speedometer were at the exact same position in 5th gear. 70mph=4000rpm, I believe 50 might be at around 3000rpm. That’s what mine was.
OZ are you running a b16a with your stock tranny ?? if you are then that sounds about right. If your running a JDM J1 then your off a bit… i have a program that will tell what your exacpt RPM would be depending on your tranny setup… give me more info i and i should be able to help…
Wut up Elmer ??
USDM or CDM J1 should be 3400 RPM in 5th gear going 70 MPH this is with stock 195 60 14 wheels and tires… If yours are larger then it will be slightly lower…

I’m pretty sure it’s J1 (75% sure). I’ll see if I can ask the previous owner about it. Tires are 185-65-14 which is only a 0.02% variance or something. I’m just curious if the stock tach is at all reliable or not.
Thanks,
Oz
It’s confirmed, I have a J1 tranny. I believe it has the same final drive ratio of 4.40. Fortunately, I was able to download some kine of RPM/Gear Ratio software. Here is the info that I gave it, so correct me if I’m wrong on this:
Final Drive: 4.40
Tire Diameter: 23.47 inches (185/65/14)
Speed: 60mph
RPM: 3779.46
OR if I change the final drive to 4.266 which I’ve seen in some tranny charts about the B16A, it would be like this:
Final Drive: 4.266
Tire Diameter: 23.47 inches
Speed: 60mph
RPM: 3664.36
Either way, my stock tachometer is way off since at 60mph on 5th I am doing 3000RPM. Again, correct me if I’m wrong guys.
Thanks,
Oz
at 70mph im some where around 4300rpm i think.
that with a B16A1 and s1 tranny.
it really sucks for me because i like to do 75-80mph and my ecu is chipped so that VTEC engages @ 4500rpm, which means im in VTEC cruising on the highway…bye bye gas.

Are you using a stock tach.? I calculated your figures using a 4.40 final drive and it spat out approx. 4400RPM.

So, it’s safe to assume that the stock tach is a POS? I guess it’s time for me to look for an XSI cluster.

Hmmm…I’ll have to try that. Maybe a wrecker here might have a GS-R cluster. Besides, I hate this Rice…errr…Ractive Indiglo gauge
BTW, my B18A stock tach is definitely off. I reset the timing to 16deg. BTDC since it was reading 15deg. Anyway, at 16deg my idle is 500RPM…or so says the tach. So, I guess at 3000RPM on my tach, I am actually shifting around 3800RPM…that’s something I’ll have to get used to I guess.
I recently did a minor tune-up and will perform a test drive to see if I eliminated that hesitation at speed.
Thanks Guys!
