well my dual action sander came recently, and i was wondering a few things about prepping my car to be painted…
well i’m planning on doing it myself so, i have a few questions before i begin…
what grit/style sanding discs should i use? (it’s an air sander)
is it okay to use spray paint primer, i plan to use my paint gun for the paint, but since primer is primer, i might as well just get spray paint to spare my gun from being clogged
what type of bondo, and what steps should be taken when using bondo?
i plan on painting my car another red color, and i’ve been told i have to do the painting all in one time period. ie all in one weekend to avoid color fading, etc
my advise: DONT USE A DA SANDER. You will make more trouble then is needed. Get 600 grit and a sanding block. And use primer last to fill in small inperfections
i read from another website from this guy who painted his car, and he said he used it on like 3 cars, and it came out fine.
i’m not doubting you, i’m just wondering why you say this. i know it will be a lot less work with the da sander as opposed to the sanding block, BUT if the sander will in some way damage the results, i won’t use it
so if anyone else thinks the da sander is bad, tell me so that i can get extremely tired using a block to sand my whole car
It isn’t more work, only if YOU have done it before, it can easily take too much off. Try it out, but I block sanded my whole car and it isn’t that hard. The DA sander would have helped on places where body filler was used though. All I can say is try it, but closley watch the results. As for body filler, use the glaze putty that comes in a blue can and you have to mix hardener in it…not bondo. My uncle used to own a body shop…just wanted to say that im not blowing hot air out of…
If you have any more questions just let me know

is there a specific name brand i should look for? i think i’ve seen something close to this, but it was made by bondo from my recolection, obviously i could have been mistaken, but if you could describe it more it’d be helpful
also, i am going to need to use the body filler, but the majority of the car will have to be block sanded
SO, what grit increments should i use…
60, 300, 500, 800 ?.. and how many sheets do you think i’ll need appx?
thanks
i’m gonna order some automotive paint soon, and i’m looking to get a 92 bumper for me before i paint the car
