Reasons vtec will not kick in

What are the different reasons that VTEC would not kick in on a B16? Please submit as many reasons as you can think of.

These are the most common reasons…

Loose or disconnected wires (VTEC Soleniod, Pressure Switch, or Ground) either on ECU pins or the VTEC purge assembly itself.

Low oil pressure

Cold engine

Speedometer not operating (broken speedo cable)

Faulty VTEC Spool Solenoid

Faulty VTEC Oil Pressure Switch

That’s all I can think of right now off of the top of my head. Best of luck and let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you.

lets not forget the one thing everyone looks around faulty ecu. or the ecu sending codes.

In all the times I’ve seen VTEC stop working, it was NEVER the ECU. But that doesn’t mean that is NOT the problem. Just the least likely culprit.

Well, I don’t have access to my vehicle at this moment to check but I’m guessing that it’s some faulty wiring. Is it possible that a disconnected vacuum hose could be the culprit? My car was running really shitty and I realized the hose to the mass air sensor was undone, it’s possible some other vacuum lines aren’t connected properly.

Dirty vtec solenoid filter.

Where exactly is that located?

Take the Vtec solenoid off and you’ll see the filter. After you see it, it’s up to you what you do with it…ie clean it or replace it.
