Rebuilding B18C Block

I’m currently rebuilding my B18C head and block. I’m sending my head to PYR for port, polish and valve job. I’m gonna disassemble the block and need to know what should be done. I’m gonna replace all the bearings, rings and use ITR pistons with the stock GSR con-rods. How bout balancing the crank and honing/resurfacing the piston sleeves? Is is necessary? I was also considering using ITR con-rods. Would it be worth it? Any info/help would be greatly appreciated.

This is what I would do.

Get some JDM ITR .25 oversized pistons. Pick up a set of P73 rods (ITR). After disassembling the block, have the block cleaned, decked, replugged and retapped. then have it bored 25 over and honed with the Honda specific crosshatch pattern. Have your P72 crank micropolished and mic’d for tolerances, and then have the machine shop spec new bearing sizes for you or you can plastigauge the block yourself. Either way will work fine. Have the entire rotating assembly (anything that hangs on the crankshaft) dynamically balanced. Put a new water pump, oil pump, belt tensioner and tensioner spring on the block. Obviously use all new gaskets. And this should give you a VERY nice block (essentially a JDM ITR block with a lighter crankshaft). Hope this helps.

Rebuilding B18C Block

Thanks for the info Dan. I still have some questions and I’ll let you know what I’m planning to do.

I talked to a Balance shop and he’s gonna balance the pistons, rods and crank. He’s also gonna remove the old oil gallies and replace them with set-screws.

I talked to a Machine shop and he’s gonna hone the cylinder walls for me.

My Uncle (Pro-Image Honda & Acura) said Honda makes oversize piston rings that would allow the honing and use of the original ITR pistions.

My questions are:

What is the tolerance(how much can I bore over) to use these oversized rings, If you know off the top of your head?

What would be the pros of using ITR con-rods over my stock GSR ones?

If I have my crank balanced, would I still be able to use new standard bearings or do I need to get speced out for different ones?

Greatly appreciate the help man.

IMO don;t go to Peter Yem, he’s moody, if he feels like doing good work on your head he will , if he doesn;t he doesn’t. go with Portflow
Tom does good work, he’s done my head work and he’s done Dan’s as well. As for the bearings you’d have to get the correct colors (bearings) that correspond with your crank and block, plastigauge and then go from there and see if u need thicker bearings or not. just curious, do u have a Helms manual handy? lucky for me i have access to a 94 integra Helms. as for Rods, u can use gsr’s and possibly get em shot peened to save some money, i know dan used ITRs with his, with mine i went with Eagle con rods. Rebuilding B18C Block

Robbie,

Thanks for the reply. Portflow was my first choice but they’re charging 900.00, if I remember right it was 750.00 not too long ago. I got some guys here in Denver that says they’ll do it for 600.00 as well but I don’t know the quality of their work.

I have a helms manual for our tegs and I damm good mechanic that knows his ****! Actually he’s my uncle so labor is free but I’ll owe him favors for the rest of my life!

Do you or anyone reading this know anyone that does good port/polish/valve jobs for around 600.00? Any state is fine as long as the turn-around time isn’t too long and their work is reputable.

Do you have any hook-ups with Port-flow?

Thanks man.

Yep, deffinately the best choice. They’ve had my head for about 4 weeks now but I’m not complaining since they found out that my exhaust valves were bent (Yup, all 8 were bent at 60K miles, what’s up with that?) Anyway, they know their stuff and have had acceptable answers to everything I’ve asked.
