Car died and wont start. So yesterday I took the dist cap off and when the car tries to start the rotor wont even spin… so do I need to replace the rotor? What else would cause this? The ignition coil? And if so how hard is that to replace and how much would that run me? I just picked up a manual but havnt had time to look through it yet. Thanks for all of your help.
Could be that your Distributor bearing went out…this happens alot with our distributors. You may need to replace the distributor, try removing the distributor (mark your timing adjustment before removing) and try spinning the rotor shaft. If it’s binding or doesn’t move, then you need to replace the WHOLE distributor. You can buy a NEW one at the dealer and pay $350 or take a chance and save $$ by going to a junkyard and picking an identical one up for $150. Do take your old distributor with you to the junkyard if you go that route, make sure it’s identical, or you’re going to be worse off! If you buy a new one from the dealer (my recommendation, i’ve gone through 5 junk yard one’s already, all ended up with the same problem), just cannibalize all the parts off the old distributor (coil, wiring), make sure you order another gasket kit for the distributor cap (and replace cap/rotor at the same time). That way, you’ll have the mose reliable distributor. HTH.
I think your timing belt has snapped sir… :uhoh:
Take off the oil cap and see if the cams are spinning when the engine is cranking.
(or better yet, just take off the timing belt cover and stop cranking the motor before you bend something). :bawl:
I concur with David. Sounds like you snapped your timing belt. Perform the “cam movement” check and that will tell you for sure.
yep, that’s what happened to me. just drivin along…then , nothing. silencio.no starto. do the cam check.
Yep, that sounds like a broken timing belt to me…
