Shifting to reverse..

Anyone know why you can only shift into reverse when its perfectly motionless without grinding? And sometimes you can’t shift it into reverse without letting the clutch out then pushing it back in. Then it usually grinds after that if i shift quick…

Yea i have the same problem too, when i shift to reverse i hear a loud grinding noise… even when it is motionless too , it still grindz, i have to let go of the clutch and then push it back in and then i can shift, and it grindz a muther…dunno watz wrong

If its grinding when motionless try putting it into 1st gear then into reverse or give a bit of gas while putting it into reverse.

I do that every time i put it into reverse. All i do is put it in 1st, then 2nd, then reverse. Why 2nd? I dunno, its just a habit. =o)

even siRs have that problem, but like you guys mentioned first to reverse!

It’s because 1st and Reverse Gears do not have the syncronizing mesh gears to help the gears match the speed of the tranny, before “meshing” into the next gear. So you’re trying to shove a gear into another gear going at different speeds (without the synchros), that’s why there’s grinding. As for grinding when you’re at a complete stop, it shouldn’t, unless you’re clutch is not operating as it should…or you’re not fully into the gear before you start moving. If you’re at a full stop and trying to get into reverse, but it’s difficult, shift into 2nd (this somewhat neutralizes…I guess you could say…the gears) and then shift into reverse.

I have heard that most Japanese cars, specifically Honda’s have this problem.

I actually took out my manual one day and read it again and it actually says that if you are experiencing grinding when shifting to reverse then shift to one of the forward gears then shift into reverse. So I’ve been doing this ever since. I just shift to 3rd, then to 4th then to reverse, why might you ask, well just habit I guess, works fine for me. Double clutching helps too. And this is all done “motionless”, a complete stop. I do this everytime I drive out of my garage.

Thanx for the help guyz, it really worked, now i can shift to revrese while in the parking lot without that loud grind while at school. pretty embrassing while my friendd stare at me all wierd and say" sumthing wrong with your car?" peace out ya

almost every import i ever drove has had that problem, i just throw it in 3rd then reverse on every car now =)
