I am getting 6.5" speakers with a 2.8" mounting depth; mounting depth for front doors is 2". Will this take a lot of modification to get them to fit?
Also has anyone made custom kickpanels for our cars? What size speakers did you use?

nah it wont…just cut the bowl portion of the speaker basket off.
You should not have a problem, except its possible that the stock basket diameter might not be big enough so you might need to make some mdf rings instead.

Check www.sounddomain.com They have a vehicle fitment guide and might have your speakers.
sounddomain’s vehicle fitment guide is kind of screwy. It says our cars have 6x9s in the rear. bah.
it’s not screwy, just incomplete. if im correct, the g2 sedans uses 6x9’s in the rears while the coupe/hb uses 6.5’s in the front and rears.
and to answer your question, most aftermarket speakers will have a deeper mounting depth than what the stock holes will allow due to that plastic basket. What I did was take that basket out and trim off the back part off so what you have left is just a plastic ring. screw the ring back on(only fit in one way) and then mount your speakers onto the ring. The opening of the ring should fit almost all of the 6.5 speakers out there. I also recommend getting those foam or plastic baskets that fit behind the speaker(looks like a bowl made of foam or plastic). these will protect the rear part of the speaker from moisture and water. i also notice that it helps out the sound too because using the whole door as an enclosure really hurts the sound quality (too many holes and air leaks. what about window clearence? if you monut deep speakers. won’t the window hit them if theya re too deep? anyone know the deepest speaker we can put in there without hitting the window on teh stock basket?
I have 3 way Focal Utopia splits in my Teg. I have the 7" midbass in the front doors.they have a mounting depth of 3.0", we used a 3/4" MDF spacer they fit with no problems, we fully sound deadened the doors, in custom kick panels we have a 4" mid range and a tweeter. We had to move the fuse box and all related wiring behind the kicks. They all fit with no problems. I have 6" rear speakers in the factory locations, with sound deadening all around. They look great and sound even better.
heh
tegboy. . . that’s my ideal setup
. . . unfortunately I don’t have 2 grand to spend on a stereo. ![]()
But I did get about $1000 worth of stuff of ebay for around $600 ![]()
I’m actually about to put a set of the Focal Polykevlar 165K2s in my 'teg. A friend is telling me that I need to put the woofer in the door otherwise I will get no midrange (as opposed to a kickpanel). Does this sound right?
Hi, I actaully change to the 3 way poly kevlar series on the weekend. they sound a million times better than the Utopia. Put the midbass in the door, the mid-range in the kicks with the tweeter, put some dacron (the stuff in pillows) behind the kick panels it will make them sound alot better.
