steering wheel squeeks after rotating

ok this is kind of hard to explain.
i recently took the steering rack off the car and when i put it back on i never thought to straighten the steering wheel before connecting the column to the rack. so yesterday i took just the steering wheel off and turned it about 1/3 of a turn and centered it.
when i turn the wheel now, it makes a horrible squeeking noise and is harder to turn. i know its getting caught, somehow the wheel is closer to the column and its rubbing that plastic trim piece. and the nut is not even tight, i left it a bit loose because i could barely turn the wheel when the nut it tight. i’ve taken the wheel off and put it back and it still does this.

when it off center it was fine…
