tach makes sudden jumps

for some reason when my car idles i notice my tach makes sudden jumps then boggs like if it is about to stall… does anybody have this problem? also does anybody know the proper gab setting of a spark plug for a jdm b16a?

The problem is in your distributor some where. You may have a loose wire at the coil or igniter. Check to see if the cap is covered in dust or not. Replace it just to be on the safe side with the rotor. Only use Acura parts. If the problem still persists then you may have a failed bearing and the shaft within the distributor loose. You will however then need to replae the distributor sub-assembly. The only components in there you can buy is the cap, rotor, rotor cover, coil and igniter. The sensors, shaft or bearing aren’t service able.

same thing happened to me a while ago, my coils were all rusted and burned out. i endend up getting another one from a junkyard. it worked fine, but last night it started jumping again. now im worried.

time for msd ignition

whats the price on one of those rotor covers/ leak cover

can u explain to me wht msd ignition is? please

TIA

ok i fixed the problem, carchitect is 100% correct… unfortunatly it is a distributor problem, i replaced my b16a distributor with my b18a distributor and now it runs like a champ… only problem is only 1 bolt holds the b18a distributor in place… i dunno how the swap guide said 2 bolts hold it in place… does anybody have pictures of this cuz i’m pretty sure alot of us would like to see how its done…

The top bolt will hold the the distributor in just fine.

As far as running the MSD ignition. Your ignition coil is a transfromer. It works by having a field charge on the primary side and then when power is disconnected from it it discharges onto the secondary side. The primary side is the two wires in the distributor that are at the coil. The secondary wires is the ground (i.e. distributor housing ) and the plug wires. The thing is that at high RPMs the ignition coil has less time to charge completely. As you revup the time for the next firing event is closer. The ign. coil charges using the batt voltage 12.5-14V. The MSD charges its coils at 470volts !!

This doesn’t necessarily give you any power but will assure you a powerful spark every time. I’ve noticed an improvement in gas milage. at 80mph cruising I get 33 MPG and I run a 93 GSR tranny with a busy 4500 rpm at this speed.

Honda, on the Vtec models, and ran platinum plugs. These plugs are a worse conductor. The only advantage is that they are a self cleaning tip and can be run for a longer period of time. The ground electrode isn’t platinum its steel. Copper is the best conductor period. Platinum uses less voltage to ignite a spark however. So running an MSD will give you a 100% powerful spark on copper plugs all the way to 25000 RPM !!
